Summary:
Full‑time, non‑exempt position assisting dentists and hygienists in primary care dental services, including sterilization, preparation, and inventory control of instruments and supplies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assists patients in resolving minor difficulties, answering questions, and giving directions as authorized.
Serves as dentist’s or dental hygienist’s chair‑side assistant.
Prepares the operatory for patient treatment per department protocols and clinician instructions.
Exposes and develops radiographs in accordance with state regulations, law, and department protocol.
Performs delegated procedures under dentist direction per regulation and protocol.
Maintains department equipment per manufacturer and policy.
Maintains all department areas in compliance with infection control, exposure control, and safety protocols.
Maintains adequate operatory supplies and manages inventory control and ordering.
Keeps patient list, monitors flow, and assists with accurate record filing.
Handles professional telephone calls related to clinic business and patient care.
Assists with various clinical and administrative functions as available.
Ensures sterility of reusable instruments per department protocol.
Ensures proper disposal of contaminated materials per regulations and policy.
Complies with the Exposure Control Plan, including PPE and universal precautions.
Participates in appropriate health promotion/disease prevention activities on‑site or off‑site.
Travels as necessary to meet operational needs.
Performs other related tasks as directed to achieve organizational goals.
Fully complies with all applicable regulations, policies, and confidentiality requirements.
Supervisory Responsibilities No direct reports.
Requirements Qualifications Perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities to perform essential functions.
Education and Experience High school diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited dental assistant course preferred. Ability to work with a diverse patient population and collaborate with multi‑disciplinary health professionals.
Language Skills Read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively to groups of customers or employees.
Reasoning Ability solve practical problems and handle variable conditions with limited standardization; interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills Familiarity with practice management system, Microsoft Office Suite, and accounting software.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Certified Dental Assistant preferred. Current CPR (BLS) required.
Other Skills Spanish language ability helpful.
Physical Demands Prolonged sitting or standing. Manual dexterity, hand‑eye coordination, and ability to use telephone, computer terminals, and copiers. Work under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxins, medicinal preparations, radiation, and other clinical conditions.
Work Environment Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, radiation. Moderate noise level.
