The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum, and newborn patients. The CNM performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications. The CNM practice includes primary as well as specialized care provided in multiple locations. The CNM promotes safety and quality in clinical care, contributes to research and teaching, and provides leadership in the organization.

Responsibilities

Provide direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies; document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings; order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests; explain procedures to patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners; perform approved therapeutic procedures based on patient’s status; document preparation and response to procedures.

Formulate and implement prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care; collaborate with physicians and nursing colleagues; document in medical records and narrative summaries; utilize prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Michigan Board of Nursing; document all prescriptions in the patient’s medical record; assess patient for changes in status and institute appropriate interventions; initiate emergency interventions as needed.

Research and utilize current evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice; incorporate findings into standards of care.

Participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research; support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.

Demonstrate professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.

Contribute to the body of knowledge in nursing or area of specialization through professional activities and dissemination of findings.

Participates in integrated team meetings.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, clinical practice standards, and maternal/fetal growth and development; ability to independently seek resources and solve complex problems.

Effective communication with patients, families, colleagues, physicians, and leadership.

Ability to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatments, and follow-up; strong documentation and computer skills; leadership in clinical area.

Ability to navigate hospital systems to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations.

Physical stamina including prolonged standing and walking; ability to lift up to fifty pounds; ability to move or assist with patients as needed.

Education/Experience At least 3 years practicing as a CNM.

Certificates And Licenses

Certification of Michigan Nurse Midwifery

Life Support

Valid driver’s license

HIPAA training certificate
