The Histotechnologist – Anatomic Pathology is responsible for performing all routine microtomy and staining of surgical specimens, including immunohistochemistry (IHC) and special stains. They prepare tissues for microscopic diagnosis by a Pathologist, utilizing manual, semi-automated, and automated technologies. The role involves maintaining tissue integrity throughout the pre-analytic to post-analytic phases in the laboratory, producing high-quality slides, and collaborating closely with Pathologists to ensure efficient and timely slide preparation. Key Responsibilities:
Perform STAT and routine histological procedures, including preparation, processing, and staining of patient tissues prior to microscopic examination. Process and embed tissues in paraffin and cut paraffin blocks using microtomes, adjusting settings based on tissue type. Ensure proper tissue processing and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Follow Standard Operating Procedures, prepare stains and solutions, and perform routine, special, and immunohistochemical staining. Cover slips and evaluate the quality of stains and sections microscopically. Perform complex histologic procedures, analyze results, and troubleshoot issues using scientific principles. Conduct immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, special stains, and frozen section studies. Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations. Obtain and validate tissues used in special stains. Maintain safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards. Prepare and maintain slides, solutions, and manage hazardous chemicals responsibly. Maintain equipment, quality control, and supply inventories. Keep work environment clean and well-stocked according to hospital protocols. Participate in inter-shift coverage for emergencies, time off, and holidays. Prepare slides and blocks with proper patient identification, adhering to lab practices. Contribute to monthly Quality Assurance activities. Accurately match and label specimen containers and cassettes with surgical numbers. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
