Position Summary The Center for African and African American Studies invites applications for a one-year (renewable for a second year) Dr. Anthony B. Pinn Postdoctoral Associate in African and African American Studies. The position is from August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027, with the possibility of renewal for a second year (subject to performance review and funding). It is a full-time, residential position with a 1/1 teaching load and is benefits-eligible. The Postdoctoral Associate will receive an annual salary of $70,000 and a $5,000 one-time stipend for research and/or relocation to Houston.

The successful candidate’s primary responsibility during their time at Rice will be to make substantial progress on their own research and writing projects and to engage with the university’s diverse intellectual community. The successful candidate will be paired with a faculty mentor and be expected to present work-in-progress to occasional campus audiences. Fellows will have the opportunity to contribute to the CAAAS curriculum in consultation with the director and director of undergraduate studies.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in a humanities or social science discipline, conferred between January 1, 2023, and July 31, 2026

Preferred Qualifications

Interdisciplinary commitment

Demonstrated commitment to teaching and research in African and African American Studies

Research in digital humanities, medicine, law, and environmental sciences

Research situated Houston, Latin America and the Caribbean, and/or Africa.

Scholars whose research addresses African American histories of Houston, Eastern Texas, preservation, public history, and digital humanities

Essential Functions

Teach two courses in the Center for African and African American Studies per academic year

Progress significantly in research and toward publication, for example, by conducting research, developing manuscripts, and presenting at conferences

Participate in the intellectual life of the Center alongside undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and visiting scholars
