NVA General Practice . An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with the opportunity to understand daily operations and gain hands-on clinical experience. Each hospital is unique but shares a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and service. Students will work with supervising veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management. Additionally, externs will develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Externship durations range from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
