The purpose of this job is to perform inspections for compliance with Municipal, State, and National codes and identifies defects and potential hazards. Perform residential and commercial building inspections. Consults with engineers, architects, developers, contractors, owners, and the public. Inspects complicated institutional and commercial projects. Leads, trains, advises, and assists staff with questions and major projects.
Responsibilities include:
Conduct inspections of industrial, residential and commercial properties to assure compliance with municipal, state and national building codes and to identify defects in structural elements
Consult with engineers, builders, contractors and owners regarding the provisions of the building codes, ordinances, laws and design criteria and requirements; make recommendations and solve construction problems
Review construction plans; work with plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and zoning inspectors on final inspections, problems, and permits; make recommendations for procedural and code changes
Coordinate, plan, direct and assign the work of lower level building inspectors; provide training to subordinate employees
Issue and authorize use and occupancy permits; issue building permits; issue violation notices; conduct follow‑up inspections; provide court testimony on building code violations
Maintain records and prepare statistical, written and oral reports on activities
Handle complaints from the public, answer questions from public, realtors, contractors and builders
Submit complaint documents to the State of Michigan
Utilize computer systems to obtain information and make result entries for completed inspections
Perform related work as required
Required Education and Experience
High School diploma
--AND--
At least six (6) years of experience in the building construction trade, including two (2) years of code enforcement work

Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
Building Inspection registration
Plans Examiner registration
Knowledge of
Principles and practices of building and structural elements
The methods, materials, and techniques used in building construction
The various building codes and standards to be enforced
City geographic layout, street locations, quadrant, and addressing systems
Safety practices and equipment
Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
Skill in
Organization and time management
Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
Assigning, prioritizing, monitoring, and reviewing work assignments
Ability to
Interpret ordinance and apply the intent of the code
Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures
Maintain records and prepare reports
Inspect work being performed and determine adherence to code
Review, read and interpret building code, construction details, and plans
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Meet schedules and deadlines of the work
Understand and carry out oral and written directions
Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
