HII . Responsibilities

Be willing to complete two weeks of unpaid training in the Deck Electrician trade (80 hours, 7:00am – 3:30pm, Monday–Friday). Assist with installation, repair, overhaul, and operational testing of electrical systems on aircraft carriers and submarines as part of the Deck Electrician role. Read and interpret complex electrical schematics; participate in lighting and receptacle installations, wire way rack installation, and electronic control installation. Perform preventative maintenance, rebuild equipment, weld studs for mounting equipment, and work in environments that require safety, precision, and adaptability. Work in various weather conditions and in confined spaces on ships, with emphasis on safety and physical agility. Qualifications

Must be able to pass a 2-week (UNPAID) program (80 hours), 7:00am – 3:30pm (Monday – Friday). Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen. Must be able to pass a physical agility test. Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily. Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds and perform overhead work. Must be able to work overtime as needed; must be clean shaven to wear a respirator. Must be able to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions and at extreme heights; must be able to work in small, tight, confined spaces. Must be willing to work any shift. Nice to have: High school graduate or equivalent (preferred). About the Role & Training Partners

Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals seeking a trade and full-time work at Newport News Shipbuilding. The Deck Electrician Trainee program is offered at Virginia Peninsula Community College (Hampton, VA). This program is 2 weeks (UNPAID), 80 hours, 7:00am – 3:30pm, Monday–Friday. The program is part of a broader effort to provide course-to-hire opportunities in the Marine Trades Training programs.
