Position Summary This position is responsible for continuous on‑site electrical inspection of complex municipal‑type construction projects, both new facilities and rehabilitation work.
The inspector ensures projects are completed in accordance with electrical plans, specifications and applicable codes, and that all installations adhere to safety standards to protect employees and public welfare.
Job Responsibilities
Provides daily on‑site oversight of electrical contractor activities under the supervision of the Electrical Inspection Supervisor.
Inspects all phases of construction with emphasis on electrical work to verify conformance with plans, specifications and relevant codes.
Ensures materials and equipment installed conform to approved submittals, specifications and codes.
Performs on‑site inspections of complex electrical components, wiring, switchgear, transformers and other equipment to assess adherence to project specifications and approved submittals.
Inspects projects with medium voltage equipment (1,000 V and up) and generators.
Witnesses testing of cables and all equipment, including medium voltage systems.
Verifies the installation of conduit, steel and concrete in duct banks for proper placement and alignment.
Conducts visual inspections of contractor testing such as wire continuity, insulation resistance, switchgear and equipment testing.
Ensures breaker and relay settings are as required by specifications and short‑circuit study.
Notifies the Electrical Inspector Supervisor when issues or discrepancies arise.
Maintains detailed daily reports of all activities, testing, weather conditions, work quantities and progress, and manages multiple ongoing projects.
Verifies the accuracy of work quantities for each monthly estimate.
Is available to the contractor during all working hours for resolving electrical questions concerning construction details.
Communicates and collaborates with project managers and engineers to explain requirements and provide technical assistance.
Ensures contractors adhere to on‑site safety standards and immediately addresses any hazardous conditions.
Mentors and trains Entry‑Level Electrical Inspectors, providing guidance on inspection techniques and code interpretations.
Job Requirements Education & Experience
High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
Five (5) years of electrical inspection experience, or three (3) years of industrial, water or wastewater electrical experience.
Must maintain a current, valid driver’s license and be able to drive an NTMWD district vehicle.
Texas Journeyman Electrician license required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Proficient with relevant codes and standards, such as AREMA C&S Manual, NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, IEEE and NESC.
Ability to read and interpret electrical and utility drawings and schematics for industrial, municipal, water treatment and wastewater treatment facilities.
Extensive knowledge of the National Electrical Code, local codes and related safety regulations.
Proficient in identifying non‑compliance issues and recommending practical solutions.
Knowledge of medium voltage (1,000 V and up) electrical systems.
Effective communication skills – in person, by telephone and email.
Capability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations, scale distances from plans, and measure distances on the ground.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat and construction management software.
Detail‑oriented with a strong aptitude for independent work.
Environmental and Physical Working Conditions Work varies between indoor and outdoor environments. Outdoor tasks may involve exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, heights and uneven surfaces. Tasks may require sitting, standing, walking, bending, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, carrying or dragging up to 100 lb. Equipment used includes level, steel tape, camera, testing equipment and electrical equipment. Work may vary depending on information requests.
