Equipment Mechanic - Certified
This is a full‑time Civil Service position in General Services. The position performs skilled repairs and maintenance work on a wide variety of on‑road heavy‑duty vehicles greater than 20,000 GVWR as well as off‑road grounds or construction equipment. Related duties are performed as required.
The men and women in Metro’s General Services Department are there to make sure the rest of government works, from ensuring that our city’s vehicles run safely and smoothly, to keeping city buildings up to par, to providing printing services and more.
This announcement may be used for day or evening shift opportunities.
Repair diesel‑powered vehicles and/or equipment according to manufacturer standards.
Inspect and diagnose various problems.
Maintain gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electrical and other related systems.
Maintain and repair dozers, backhoes, rollers, pavers, milling machines, a wide variety of other heavy‑duty equipment and light‑duty grounds equipment such as mowers and golf‑course equipment, etc.
Rebuild pumps, cylinder heads, cable control units and renew pins and bushings on tracks.
Perform machine lathe work when necessary.
Weld and fabricate.
Repair or replace worn or defective parts.
Adjust fuel systems and perform tune‑ups.
Road test vehicles before and after repairs.
Provide roadside assistance including emergency repairs out of shop.
Ensure that proper service is maintained.
Complete work orders on every vehicle repaired.
Keep tools, equipment and shop area clean and orderly.
Acquire parts from stockroom staff.
Attend seminars and training as needed.
Operate a service truck safely.
May perform emissions test.
High School Diploma and two (2) years of experience repairing heavy‑duty motor vehicles and related equipment.
No substitutions will be considered for this position.
LICENSES REQUIRED Any four (4) A.S.E. Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications.
T1 – Gasoline Engines
T2 – Diesel Engines
T3 – Drive Train
T4 – Brakes
T5 – Suspension & Steering
T6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems
T7 – Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning
T8 – Preventive Maintenance Inspection
Must obtain a Class B commercial driver’s license within the first 12 months of employment.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Employee must furnish proper tools to perform the job. Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078, all employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
