Job Title: Building Inspector (Mechanical and Plumbing) Salary to be determined commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Performs responsible entry-level inspection work to ensure compliance with established codes in the areas of mechanical and plumbing construction. Responsibilities include inspecting materials and installations, interpreting, applying, and enforcing rules and regulations related to new building construction and repairs. Reviews plans and specifications for new constructions, alterations, and repairs to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances.

This position is part of a Career Ladder Program (Inspector I-Inspector IV), offering advancement opportunities for inspectors willing to expand their knowledge and responsibilities. Certification as a combination inspector is encouraged for career progression.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school.

One to three years of direct building construction inspection experience or related practical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Applicants with five years of inspection experience, relevant certifications, and knowledge of building codes may be considered for a Building Inspector II position with a starting salary of $47,133.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of plumbing and mechanical codes and the ability to interpret them to identify deficiencies requiring corrective action.

Familiarity with electrical and structural codes is desired.

Must complete the Code Academy and relevant certification tests within 18 months of hire.

Valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with a good driving record is mandatory.

Responsibilities:

Conduct plumbing and mechanical inspections on residential and commercial buildings, including rough-in and final inspections.

Perform other inspections as directed.

This position is designated as essential (County designation as ALPHA). In emergencies or inclement weather, the incumbent is expected to report to work as per department procedures or supervisor instructions.

Additional Requirements:

DMV records check prior to employment.

Ability to operate machinery and equipment, including measuring gauges, radios, computers, and vehicles.

Physical ability to walk, stand, climb stairs/ladders, stoop, and crawl during inspections.
