Maintenance III – Groundskeeper and Upholstery/Sign Specialist Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor – Roads and Grounds Position Purpose:

To keep the District’s facilities and grounds maintained and operational as well as to provide upholstery and sign services so that they present no problems or interruptions to the education program. Qualifications: High school graduate or equivalent. Minimum of six years as an upholsterer and sign maker in a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting. Knowledge and experience working with drapery, blinds, and shades. Successful completion of a course of study in turf management, horticultural science, arborist studies, graphic design, grounds maintenance, or an equivalent experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess basic computer skills (Preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment) and ability to apply skills in day-to-day operations. Demonstrated proficiency with computer software such as Gravograph 7 Discovery, Vinyl Express LXI Master Plus and sign making equipment to create backgrounds, lettering, artwork, etc. within the borders of the particular design. Experience using a Gravograph IS 900 engraving machine with a Raster Braille pen and a Hermes Vanguard Vinyl System machine preferred. Experience and training in upholstery, silk screening, painting, sign making, drapery, blinds, shades, landscaping, grounds maintenance, mowing, fertilizing, soil testing, aerating, weed control, painting athletic field lines, heavy equipment operation, snow removal, machining, welding, concrete/asphalt, fencing, playground maintenance, and roof repair. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as determined to be appropriate and acceptable. Knowledge of commercial/industrial practices, processes, and applicable code requirements related to the upholstery and sign trade. Knowledge of standard practices, tools, and terminology in upholstery, sign making, drapery, blinds, shades, landscaping, grounds maintenance, heavy equipment operation, and other assigned skill areas. Ability to fit, install, and secure material on frames using hand tools, power tools, glue, cement, staples, etc. Ability to make and install signs and banners to meet needs of the District. Ability to maintain vehicles and equipment. Ability to read, understand, and apply technical information in equipment and facilities maintenance manuals, technical bulletins, blueprints, and associated upholstery, sign making, grounds keeping literature; must be able to interpret the technical language within the assigned skill areas. Ability to design or modify components to meet job requirements in the assigned skill areas. Must have a valid Kansas driver’s license and possess a good driving record. Ability to work in varied weather and temperature conditions. Ability to work from heights. Knowledge of colors. Ability to perform work independently according to prescribed standards and procedures with a minimum of supervision. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Dependability and the ability to get along with others. Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, hazardous materials, and proper ways necessary to perform the assigned tasks. Physical/Emotional Requirements: The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day. The incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds. Performance Responsibilities: Reports to the Maintenance Supervisor – Roads and Grounds to receive each day’s assignments. Perform upholstery, sign making, drapery, blinds, shades, and grounds maintenance activities as assigned or by following an established work schedule. Respond to work requests in a timely and courteous manner. Perform maintenance and repair tasks in accordance with appropriate standards and procedures. Examine furniture frames, upholstery, springs, webbing, etc. to locate defects; draw cutting lines on material following patterns, templates, sketches, or blueprints using chalk, pencils, paint, or other methods. Fit, install, and secure material on frames using hand tools, power tools, glue, cement, staples, etc.; adjust or replace webbing, padding, or springs and secure them in place. Restore or repair custom upholstered furniture using hand tools and knowledge of fabrics and upholstery materials; repair furniture frames and refinish exposed wood. Remove covering, webbing, padding, or defective springs from work pieces using hand tools such as hammers and tack pullers; stretch webbing and fabric using webbing stretchers. Operate sewing machines or sew upholstery by hand to seam cushions and join various sections of covering material; sew rips or tears in material, or create tufting using needles and thread. Interweave and fasten strips of webbing to the backs and undersides of furniture using small hand tools and fasteners; attach bindings or apply solutions to edge of cut material to prevent raveling. Attach fasteners, grommets, buttons, braids, buckles, ornamental trim, and other accessories to covers or frames using hand tools, etc. Apply knowledge and experience to determine types and amounts of materials required to cover work pieces; measure and cut new covering materials using patterns as well as measuring and cutting instruments, following sketches and design specifications. Manufacture interior and exterior signs for the District using wood, vinyl, plastic, aluminum, etc. according to specifications; engrave signs, produce stencils, produce silkscreens, etc. as required. Produce and install banners, drapery, blinds, shades, frames, name plates, etc. for the District; repair and replace all signs, banners, drapery, blinds, shades, etc. throughout the District as necessary. Select materials for signs, banners, drapery, blinds, shades, etc.; select letter heights, widths, types, and numbers. Create backgrounds, lettering, artwork, etc. within the borders of a particular design using computer software; cut in text and graphics using a computer driven plotter. Produce and print out a mockup of each sign for review and approval. Install interior and exterior signs for the District using appropriate hardware such as sign posts, bolts, rivets, etc., and working with appropriate tools such as saws, grinders, drills, punches, rivet guns, shovels, post-hole diggers, etc. Repair and replace all signs throughout the District as necessary. Assist with a variety of work assignments including such things as upholstery, sign making, drapery, blinds, shades, painting athletic field lines, machining, welding, concrete/asphalt, fencing, playground maintenance, and roof repair. Assist with development and carry out preventative maintenance program. Follow the District’s system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies as well as maintaining recordkeeping and inventories. Ensure that all assigned vehicles, machinery, equipment, tools, and supplies are accounted for, secured, and used correctly. Attend appropriate training sessions, meetings, and classes as part of professional development. Accomplish assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner. Operate and care for equipment used in daily work assignments. Maintain accurate and complete time sheets. Assist other maintenance areas with work requests as assigned. Occasionally operate medium and heavy equipment in course of day-to-day work assignments. Assist with snow removal as necessary including operating snow plows, tractors, etc. Demonstrate professional image through appearance, language, and work ethic. Require good attendance record for continuity of operations. Perform other duties as assigned. Term of Employment:

Twelve (12) months Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of Classified Personnel. Significant Associations:
