Minimum Qualifications Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on‑the‑job training. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications Graduation from an accredited vocational school with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience as an HVAC technician.
Position Summary This position reports directly to the Facilities Manager. As a member of the team, the position is responsible for manual work at the journeyman level. Work involves installation, operation, maintenance, modification, services, and repair of HVAC systems, equipment, fixtures, and related electro‑mechanical systems in accordance with standard trade practices and applicable HVAC industry codes at the UGA Griffin Campus. Assignments are made in the form of written and oral instructions and may be accompanied by sketches and blueprints, although most work results from inspection and troubleshooting. Work is ordinarily performed independently, subject to inspection in process or upon completion.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies
Proficient in a variety of computer skills for communication, product research, recording keeping, and HVAC logic controls.
EPA Section 608 Technician Certification for individuals who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment containing refrigerants, such as HVAC systems.
Experience with a variety of HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
Good working knowledge of hand tools, multimeter, and gauges.
General mechanical and troubleshooting aptitude.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, interpret blueprints, sketches and diagrams.
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools of the HVAC trade.
Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Physical Demands
Working in a variety of indoor/outdoor work environments such as rooftops, attics, and confined spaces with exposure to variable temperatures and weather conditions.
Prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching; daily use of ladders and lifts.
Lifting and transporting materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lb.
Full range of physical motion to manually operate equipment (light truck, bucket truck, forklift, backhoe, etc.), powered tools, and to navigate throughout campus including climbing stairs and working at variable height levels.
Near‑visual acuity, depth perception, field of vision and color vision to make electrical connections, solder and splice electrical wiring.
Exposure to electrical systems, wiring, and currents that have the potential for serious injury if proper safety measures are not used.
Exposure to chemicals, fumes, allergens or gases; working around and/or operation machinery and other apparatuses.
Driving to perform job‑related tasks.
Duties & Responsibilities Approx. 50% of time:
Inspect, service, repair and maintain HVAC systems located on the UGA Griffin Campus.
Monitor Building Automation System, diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems in HVAC systems.
Test, locate, and repair HVAC equipment.
Install heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems.
Perform regular walk‑throughs of all buildings/facilities to identify any potential problems and advise appropriate administrators of any alterations and repairs that may need to be handled.
Upgrade outdated HVAC systems in older buildings and field installations.
Provide estimates of repair/replacement cost.
Approx. 30% of time:
Enforce and comply with HVAC industry codes, safety regulations, rules and working conditions in the repair, installation and maintenance of UGA HVAC systems.
Advise and report any electrical issues across campus including conditions of wiring, effectiveness of lighting or suitability of equipment as needed.
Guide other maintenance team members in applicable HVAC procedures and techniques.
Safe operation and maintenance of state property including light trucks, bucket trucks, forklifts, and backhoes.
Approx. 20% of time:
While HVAC is the primary area of expertise for this position, interdisciplinary team work is expected in cooperation with other tradesmen to perform routine maintenance as instructed by the Facility Manager.
Provide exceptional customer service and take ownership in campus facilities to ensure a safe and functional campus environment.
