About This Position Help keep Phoenix running strong. The Public Works Department is committed to enhancing the quality of life for our community through exceptional solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services. We're currently seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team and support the maintenance of critical city vehicles and equipment.
What You’ll Do
Maintain and repair a wide range of specialized vehicles and machinery, including fire equipment and emergency response vehicles, heavy diesel trucks and refuse collection vehicles, and earth‑moving and construction equipment with hydraulic systems.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
Performing preventative maintenance and safety inspections.
Diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues using scan tools.
Test‑driving vehicles to verify repairs.
Documenting services and repairs on work orders.
Supporting emergency response efforts during severe weather events such as floods or storms.

Ideal Candidate
ASE or EVT certifications.
A trade school or apprenticeship certificate in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
Salary Pay Range: $33.41 to $42.64 per hour. Hiring Range: $33.41 to $36.84 per hour.
Shift Differential Pay Employees may be eligible for additional pay when working night or weekend shifts. This includes scheduled hours that fall during late evenings, overnight periods, and designated weekend shifts. Shift differential applies only to hours worked and not to paid leave.

Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Minimum Qualifications
Five years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, including work on heavy‑duty construction or firefighting equipment OR
Completion of a recognized heavy‑duty equipment mechanic apprenticeship.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record.
Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Work And Environmental Conditions Requirements
Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
Preferred Qualifications
Working with alternative fuel systems, including CNG conversions and repairs.
Reading and interpreting electrical and hydraulic schematics.
Maintaining heavy and off‑road equipment, including HVAC systems.
Servicing refuse trucks and specialized municipal vehicles.
Welding and fabrication using MIG, TIG, and plasma cutting tools.
Supporting emergency response operations.
