Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and over fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre‑college programs. In 2023 the college served approximately 24,000 students from 136 countries, with more than one-third born outside the United States. Sixty percent are first‑generation college students. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over 25, and 46 percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Graduates often transfer to four‑year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete bachelor’s degrees; career graduates enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020).
Duties Include
Provide mandated career coaching for declared majors in Computer Science and related fields.
Provide 1:1 advisement for students approaching graduation in Computer Science and related departments.
Support students’ persistence in tech majors and expand their exposure to tech careers and required courses.
Help students plan for internships and other opportunities to build experience in tech workplaces.
Promote connections to career services to increase persistence in the major.
Provide feedback to faculty from employers to aid curricular decisions.
Ensure Computer Science students are on track to participate in relevant CUNY 2x Tech programs.
Maintain a database of students in the Advising cohort.
Performs related duties and occasional weekend responsibilities as assigned.
Develop a hybrid academic‑career map for the department that provides students with timed guidance on required courses and milestones for job market success.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and four years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Understanding of the tech industry and its relationship to higher education.
Experience with data and reporting (qualitative and quantitative reports).
Previous familiarity with academic advisement, especially in STEM fields.
Previous professional experience in a tech field, preferably within or adjacent to NYC tech companies.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to quickly learn modules in the CUNYfirst system.
CUNY Title Overview
Acts as liaison between the College and employer sponsors, monitoring the success of students’ internship experiences.
Supervises student internships, ensuring adherence to College and governmental regulations.
Creates and conducts orientation sessions and workshops for students in the internship program; coordinates applications, interviews, and placement.
Provides faculty orientation and development related to internship programs.
Implements and evaluates competencies and other success factors.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Compensation and Benefits Salary: $57,252 – $70,815. Compensation commensurate with education and experience.
