District 6 Assistant Materials Engineer responsible for supporting the District 6 Materials Engineer with materials-related oversight of Iowa DOT highway and bridge projects within a 12‑county area in east central Iowa. Classification

This position is part of a Trainee/Journey Classification and is eligible for reclassification to a Transportation Engineer (current pay range: $72,238.40 - $111,238.40) within 6 months of hire with licensure as a PE. Location

Cedar Rapids Shift Requirements

Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM - 4:30 PM. Hours may vary, and some overtime may be required. Some overnight travel is required. Responsibilities

Providing engineering expertise and assistance to the District laboratory, HMA, PCC, and Aggregate Technicians including collecting samples, performing laboratory analysis, and reporting test results. Supporting the District Materials Engineer with oversight of the Independent Assurance Program (IAP) for materials testing in the District, including testing and independent assurance programs for profilograph, pavement thickness, aggregate production, pre‑cast concrete plants, etc. Supporting the District Materials Engineer by conducting materials documentation audits, performing pavement evaluations, and recommending bituminous mix design criteria for select projects. Reviewing quality control plans for materials suppliers and manufacturers. Visiting project sites to evaluate progress and specification compliance and to provide technical problem‑solving support to construction inspection staff. Conducting field trials, collecting data, and analyzing new products and testing procedures. Providing highway materials technical assistance through consultation to a variety of customers, including Iowa DOT staff, County/City/Consultant staff, contractors, and materials producers. Licenses and Certifications

Valid class C non‑commercial Driver’s License. Engineer certificate issued by the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners within 24 months of hire and licensure as a professional engineer within 6 years of hire for continued employment as a Transportation Engineer Associate. Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board. Benefits

Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management. Possession of a verification of graduation with major coursework in one of the above fields. Additional Information

Applicants hired with verification of graduation will be required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university within 10 months of hire.
