GENERAL DESCRIPTION Electrician I (Electrician Helper)

– Performs moderately complex (journey-level) work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment and circuits for the Texas Department of Public Safety. Work involves installing, replacing, and maintaining electrical systems, apparatus, components of machinery, and equipment. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Electrician II (Electrical Apprentice)

– Performs complex (journey-level) work in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits for the Department of Public Safety. Work involves installing, replacing, and maintaining electrical systems, apparatus, control panels, fixtures, equipment and other electrical components, to maintain electrical systems and to diagnose and repair operating problems of electrical components. May train others. Work under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Electrician III (Journeyman Electrician)

– Performs advanced (senior-level) work in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits. Work involves coordinating the installation, replacement, and maintenance of electrical systems, apparatus, components of machinery, and equipment. May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Electrician IV (Master Electrician)

– Performs highly advanced (senior-level) work in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits. Work involves overseeing the installation, replacement, and maintenance of electrical systems, apparatus, components of machinery, and equipment. May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES Electrician I (Electrician Helper)

Assist in installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems, apparatus, circuits, and electrical components of high voltage electrical equipment, transformer wiring and distribution panels.

Assist in installing rigid, thin wall, and flexible conduit, and wire circuits.

Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to electrical outlets, control panels, switches, fixtures and accessories, and cleans and tightens low-voltage switch gears.

Replace and reseat brushes on motors, splice wires and cables and adjust related parts and equipment; and mount motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and complete circuits.

Isolate defects in wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and other elements, and replace faulty circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems.

Inspect, test, and troubleshoot electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits.

Document and report completed installations, maintenance and repairs, the supplies, materials and equipment used, and work time applied to assigned work orders and projects.

Assist in diagnosing and correcting the cause of system malfunctions and to verify the integrity and reliability of connections made and of circuits, components and fixtures installed.

Assist in the maintenance and renovation of electrical service.

Read vendor brochures, manuals and other materials and attend training sessions to keep knowledge of technological changes in electrical equipment up-to-date.

Reset controls for power outages.

Oversight of outside contractors performing services for the agency.

Maintenance of shop vehicles.

Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Electrician II (Electrical Apprentice)

Install, repair and maintain electrical systems, apparatus, circuits, and electrical components of high voltage electrical equipment, transformer wiring and distribution panels.

Perform preventive maintenance and repairs to electrical outlets, control panels, switches, fixtures and accessories.

Replace and reseat brushes on motors, splice wires and cables and adjust related parts and equipment.

Train maintenance employees in electrical procedures and methods and inspect their completed work to assure compliance with established standards and codes.

Read vendor brochures, trade periodicals, manuals and other materials and attend training sessions to keep knowledge of technological changes in electrical equipment up-to-date.

Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.

Electrician III (Journeyman Electrician)

Coordinates the installation, replacement, and maintenance of electrical systems, apparatus, circuits, and electrical components of machinery and equipment.

Coordinates the inspection, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits.

Develops plans and specifications of maintenance and renovation projects.

Estimates time and material used on projects.

Reviews the layout of electrical wiring to ensure compliance with specifications and electrical codes.

Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair to ensure compliance with codes.

Maintains records and prepares reports on repairs and service to equipment.

May plan and coordinate the installation of electrical systems.

May plan long-range electrical maintenance programs.

May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others.

Maintains an efficient response to work orders and provides support to other crafts.

Performs preventative maintenance of all electrical panels, transformers and other electrical systems.

Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Electrician IV (Master Electrician)

Oversee the training and inspection of other electricians.

Perform preventive maintenance of all electrical panels, transformers and other electrical systems.

Oversee the inspection, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits.

Maintain an efficient response to work orders and provide support to other crafts.

Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair to ensure compliance with electrical codes.

Plan and coordinate the installation of electrical systems.

Perform general inspection, maintenance, repair including maintaining records of emergency backup generators and systems.

Estimate time and materials to be used on projects.

Maintain records and prepare reports on repairs and service to equipment.

Travel to off site and/or out of town locations to test, inspect, maintain, install or repair electrical systems.

Develop plans and specifications for maintenance and renovation projects.

Review the layout of electrical wiring to ensure compliance with specifications and electrical codes.

Plan long-range electrical maintenance projects.

Participate in afterhours on call schedule program, and respond to and address electrical issues in a timely manner.

May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others.

Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.

Perform other duties as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Education:

Electrician I – Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent plus or including vocational training (or other structured electrical code training that documents the content of electrical code learned). Electrician II‑IV – Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent plus or including vocational training in electricity and electrical code subjects.

Experience:

Electrician I – Minimum of one (1) year work experience in general maintenance repair and service in commercial or industrial facilities. Electrician II – Minimum of two (2) years’ progressively responsible experience in installing, maintaining and repairing complex commercial or industrial electrical systems or equipment. Electrician III – Minimum of four (4) years’ experience performing installation, maintenance and repair of complex commercial or industrial electrical systems or equipment. Electrician IV – Minimum of six (6) years’ experience installing, maintaining and repairing complex commercial or industrial electrical systems or equipment.

Licensure and/or Certification:

All levels require the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation license (Apprentice, Journeyman, or Master, depending on level) within 30 days of employment. A valid driver license and automobile insurance are also required.

Additional Requirements:

Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, NFPA Fire Code, and related regulations, strong diagnostic skills, ability to read and understand complex engineering, architectural, and schematic drawings, and proficiency with test instruments and hand and power tools. Must maintain safety standards and be willing to work evening, weekend and after-hours as required.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS Office, outdoors, and vehicle; stand, walk, sit; hand‑eye coordination; moving 100 pounds; extensive driving required (25%).

Current DPS employees who submit applications for posted DPS positions shall notify their immediate supervisor in writing. A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change. A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary. Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
