School Nurse - Bilingual
(Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)
The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of
School Nurse
within the Office of Health Services.
Qualifications and Requirements
An appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate or eligible for an Emergency license as deemed necessary by
NJ DOE Certification
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, unless otherwise specified by the New Jersey Department of Education.
Current New Jersey registered professional nurse license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing.
Preferred minimum of five (5) years successful experience as a registered nurse.
Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak English. Spanish/Portuguese/French Creole is a plus.
Basic Functions and Responsibilities
Develops a comprehensive health record on each new student, including health history, immunization data, and notes on health advice or referrals.
Performs routine screenings (vision, hearing, blood pressure, etc.) and refers students when deviations are detected.
Interprets physical examination findings to students, parents, and teachers, and assists in contacting professional resources for diagnosis and treatment.
Provides emergency medical care and arranges follow-up care.
Counsels parents, teachers, and students on health issues and educates staff on disease signs and symptoms.
Conducts tuberculin screening programs as mandated.
Reviews medical records annually to monitor immunization status.
Contributes to health education programs and participates in school health initiatives.
Informs child study team of medical findings to aid in student placement and achievement.
Assists in maintaining a safe, healthful school environment and collaborates with community agencies.
Dispenses medication as prescribed, following current guidelines.
Serves on school committees and performs assigned nursing functions within scope.
Performs related duties as assigned by the Director or designee.
Reports To Executive Director of Health Services
Salary, Employment Period, and Union
Annual Salary: $67,000 - $111,625 for 2025-2026 school year (plus $3,000 stipend)
Employment Period: Ten (10) months
Union Affiliation: Newark Teachers Association (NTA)
