Overview Under the direction of Clinical Nurse Manager (Inpatient)/Program Director (Partial) and Unit Charge RN, the Behavioral Health Specialist I (BHS I) is responsible for providing care and safety to children and adolescents as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. The BHS I contributes to the day-to-day schedule and structure of a therapeutic milieu and to the implementation, observation, and documentation of this program under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities

Participates in maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment. Actively engages with assigned children throughout shift.

Participates in the development and operationalization of the milieu care plan and documents patient observation levels as ordered.

Provides support to visiting parents and information as requested by the treatment team.

Supervises assigned children in daily routines and assists with activities of daily living and basic hygiene.

Identifies, reports, and resolves potential problems on the unit.

Demonstrates incident follow-up skills by reporting to the charge RN and documenting in the medical record.

Completes documentation (incident reports, intakes, etc.).

Participates in restraint debriefings and carries out daily assignments as delegated.

Intervenes in disruptive situations with timely therapeutic interventions and maintains appropriate boundaries.

Adheres to policies and procedures; attends peer review and staff meetings; maintains current crisis management and CPR certifications; attends unit/hospital staff development.

Acts in the patient care planning process; supports initial therapeutic alliance with patient and family; assists with separation and transition to hospital environment.

Documents observations and communicates milieu care plans to staff; participates in rounds, hand-offs, and treatment team discussions.

Co-leads community meetings and groups; supports behavioral management; coordinates activities and assists with transportation of materials as needed.

Coordinates, supervises, and participates in children’s activities; participates in teaching visits and family training; models professional interactions with patients and families.

Handles crisis situations using de-escalation and least restrictive methods; seeks supervision and incorporates feedback into performance.

Performs other related duties as required; may be asked to perform comparable duties in other clinical settings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications Baccalaureate degree in a Human Services field preferred; other education/experience may be substituted at the discretion of the Hiring Manager. Demonstrated aptitude to learn role-related skills. Knowledge to provide care to patients across the life span with consideration of aging, development, and cultural patterns. Safety Care Certification and ability to utilize de-escalation techniques in a psychiatric setting. Ability to remain calm during crises and participate in physical management when necessary (lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, etc.). Six months to one year of direct childcare work with emotionally impaired youth. Performs independently within program policies and practices; refers complex problems to supervisor as needed. Supervisory responsibility: None.

Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $17.77-$29.31

Work Details Work Type: Part-time; 3pm-11:30pm, alternating weekends required, holidays as assigned. Work Shift: Evening. Daily Hours: 8 hours. Driving Required: No.
