Performs imaging/therapeutic services and associated patient care with support of the Radiology Department mission to provide diagnostic information for the subsequent treatment of patients at WVU Medicine.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE

Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.

Must possess current or temporary Radiography license as required by the state board where services will be provided:

MD – Radiographer license through Maryland Board of Physicians.

OH – Radiographer license through Ohio Department of Health.

PA – No state licensure required.

WV – Radiography license or temporary radiography license through West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board.

Must be nationally certified as defined by location where services will be provided:

MD – Registered Radiography Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) upon hire.

OH – Registered Radiography Technologist by the ARRT upon hire.

PA – Registered Radiography Technologist by the ARRT within 12 months of hire.

WV – Registered Radiography Technologist by the ARRT within 6 months of hire.

Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.

State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable) as required for regulated areas.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Rotates in all Diagnostic areas for development of technical skills (Fluoro, Mobiles, Routine, Operating Room, Endoscopy, Orthopedics).

Performs image procedures based on assessment of patient status, service request, and imaging protocols, monitored by periodic image evaluations and supervision.

Produces images of optimal quality using imaging equipment and systems for image delivery and archiving.

Select exposure factors based on patient size, condition, and pathology to achieve optimal image quality while minimizing radiation exposure.

Minimizes radiation exposure to self, patients, and staff using shielding, collimation, the inverse square law, and minimizing repeat exposures.

Maintains expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to imaging to optimize procedures and ensure patient care/safety.

Assesses patient needs and provides imaging-related support for comfort, hygiene, and range of motion.

Prepares contrast agents, pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays in accordance with procedural guidelines and protocols.

Educates patients regarding radiographic procedures, explaining the process and answering questions.

Promotes team collaboration by positively interacting with technical, support, nursing, and medical staff.

Engages in problem solving, crisis management, systems implementation, and performance improvements to support efficient, high‑quality, cost‑effective patient care.

Displays imaging techniques, patient care, and guest‑relation behaviors in accordance with ARRT Code of Ethics, WVUH Administrative Policies, Radiology Department Policies, State and Federal Regulation, and Joint Commission guidelines.

Reports equipment failures immediately upon identification.

Completes all in‑services and competencies by the required date and applies knowledge gained.

Positions patients accurately in accordance with established protocols.

Participates in coordination of daily workflow.

Provides minimal instruction to radiology students in patient positioning, technique selection, equipment manipulation, and use of accessory devices to obtain radiographic images; offers clinical supervision and instruction within Radiology program policies and accrediting bodies.

Ensures that all vital components of the imaging process are completed in their entirety.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Differentiate various shades of gray and color as depicted on a monitor or photograph.

Stand and walk for prolonged periods.

Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.

Carry items up to 20 pounds.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Exposure to minimal radiation within national occupational standards, monitored by Radiation Safety and dosimetry.

Exposure to airborne particles and bodily fluids.

Operation of imaging equipment with automated moving parts.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Interact positively with patients, families, and the Health Care Team.

Prioritize and manage multiple situations simultaneously.

Improvise with altered positioning techniques, equipment manipulation, and accessory devices when routine positioning is compromised due to patient condition, age, or ability.
