Brown University Health SUMMARY: Reports to the Ambulatory Clinical Manager and/or Practice Manager, or other assigned Supervisory personnel and under general supervision of the attending License Independent Practitioner, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, screens, collects vitals from patients in an Ambulatory setting. All essential functions reflect the age-specific needs of geriatric, adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with Brown University Health’s mission, vision, values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. Responsibilities
Works effectively and respectfully at the highest capabilities and training. Follows practice, clinic or office workflow protocols to maximize quality and efficiency. Performs pre-visit planning by reviewing and updating the patient record prior to the appointment with recent test results, consults, and correspondence, and determines needed services based on practice protocols. Communicates point of care reminders to providers via the electronic medical record (EMR). Prepares patients for examination and treatment per clinic workflow protocol, escorts from waiting area to exam room. Takes vital signs, weighs patients and records in patient chart; enters in patient chief complaint, medication reconciliation, histories and other services as outlined in workflow protocol. Notes all patient complaints in EMR; records patient pain score; completes questionnaires in the patient’s chart. Ensures effective patient flow throughout the practice, clinic and office. Reviews Health Maintenance and Chronic Illness services and performs/orders according to protocols and standing orders. Performs testing procedures such as blood pressure, EKG, pulse oximetry, Hgb A1-C, glucose, urinalysis, urine hCG, rapid strep test, and other point of care tests. Records allergy information, medications, medical and family histories in the patient chart; initiates pharmacy benefits verification. Assists physician with physical examinations; performs procedures using aseptic techniques according to standard procedures. Administers vaccines and places PPDs per protocol. Completes follow-up work after visits, including labeling, recording and sending blood and specimens to labs; follows up on lab results and updates EMR. Tracks orders and results; contacts patients for outreach and reminders for labs/orders; reports abnormal lab results to physician or nurse immediately. Follows up on referrals for specialty care and/or other services; tracks consult reports and updates EMR accordingly. Checks for prescription refills and ensures exam rooms are prepared for each patient. Explains programs, procedures and preparation for tests and exams; provides education on coordination of care and prudent ER use; documents identified barriers. Schedules tests and follow-up appointments; pre-registers patient for next visit; verifies patient demographic and insurance information; obtains prior authorizations as needed. Monitors and orders supplies, keeps room stocked, cleans medical equipment, and reports broken or missing equipment to management. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality; supports patient-centered medical home goals; demonstrates flexibility and willingness to change. Qualifications
High School graduate or equivalency; able to read, write and speak English. Graduate of formal Medical Assistant training program (9 months or longer) or minimum of 3 years Medical Assistant experience in a comparable ambulatory setting within the last 5 years. Basic Life Support Certification. Ability to understand and apply policies, procedures and protocols; proficiency with PC/EMR and related software. Ability to interact professionally with patients, providers, supervisors and peers; able to react calmly in emergencies. Knowledge and skills to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging, development, and cultural patterns. Experience
Three years of experience within the last 5 years as Medical Assistant in an ambulatory setting or recent graduate of formal Medical Assistant training program (9 months or longer) within the past 2–3 years. Experience with EMR and appointment scheduling software preferred. Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Healthcare environment (hospitals, physicians’ offices, other healthcare settings). Direct patient contact and handling of medical equipment. Adheres to safety procedures and uses protective equipment as required. Walks and stands intermittently; may be exposed to electrical and energy hazards; may lift and position patients and load up to 50 pounds. Supervisory Responsibility
