Responsibilities

Performs gross following established procedures.

Performs tissue embedding following established procedures.

Performs routine cutting of paraffin blocks on a rotary microtome.

Prepares reagents following established procedures.

Receives specimens, maintains documentation of workload volume, quality control data and all appropriate records as required by the department, company and various regulatory agencies.

Maintains block files. Store specimens for future retrieval if necessary.

Matches slides and reports to ensure correct information is reported.

Stains, coverslips and labels slides (automated and manual). Performs special staining procedures offered in the histology laboratory (automated and manual).

Immunohistochemistry duties as required.

Preparation for regulatory inspections.

Researches, troubleshoots and resolves inquiries or problems within the laboratory and with any outside contractors.

Assists less experienced employees in researching, resolving and documenting problems.

Performs reagent QC on routinely used reagents. Runs parallel checks on reagents used on instruments for routine lab work. Troubleshoots reagent failures.

Performs specimen QC to ensure specimen is appropriate and properly identified for each bench.

Develops stain troubleshooting skills and develops assay trouble shooting skills. Records and determine causes for assay failure. Develops plans with manager(s) to rectify problems.

Assists with other non-technical duties within the department as requested by team leader, project analyst or supervisor to meet immediate needs of department.

Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment in designated area.

Maintains appropriate records as required by department, company and various regulatory agencies.

Gains knowledge of department operations and procedures.

Adheres to the laboratory's safety policies.

Wears proper PPE when handling and processing specimens and hazardous waste.

Discards biohazard waste properly.

Discards hazardous waste properly.

Notifies supervisor, project analyst or team leader immediately of any lab accident or exposure incident.

Maintains adequate stock of working supplies, notifies manager(s) of shortages.

Helps with monthly inventory count.

Participates in required Continuing Education activities.

Adheres to lab policies and protocols.

Shows a high level of respect for all lab personnel and other practice personnel.

Attends all required meetings and represents laboratory in a professional manner.

Qualifications

Microtomy experience required.

Bachelor's Degree with 1-3 years of experience in Histology.

Experience in a histology lab setting is required.

Administrative experience: filing experience, maintain logs/records, use of computerized databases, verbal and written communications.

Training, Safety, PPE, Blood borne pathogens, Hazardous waste, Safety equipment, Evacuation plan and route, Sharps, Procedure training checklists (as applicable). Instrument training is incorporated in individual procedure training checklists as applicable.

Specimen accessioning, specimen gross description, embedding, microtomy, special stains.

Compensation The compensation for this role includes a base pay range of $30,250–$45,350, with the actual pay determined by factors such as skills, experience, education, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. Additional compensation may be available through shift differentials, bonuses, and other incentives. Base pay is only a portion of the total rewards package.
