Job Description
The Fisheries Biologist will be responsible for planning, leading, and executing technical aquatic sciences programs and projects. This includes maintaining strong relationships with GEI staff, clients, and teaming partners, and managing or contributing to environmental project and proposal teams. The ideal candidate will have experience with small, medium, and large-scale projects in fisheries, aquatic sciences, and natural resources involving aquatic systems. Projects are primarily in California, with occasional work in other states.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
The successful applicant will provide leadership and support in fisheries and aquatic ecology technical work, including fisheries sampling, ecological restoration, natural resource management planning, ESA compliance, and impact analyses related to ESA, FERC, SWRCB, NEPA, and CEQA. Experience with FERC regulations is a plus. Projects involve complex fisheries analyses, mitigation planning, interdisciplinary teamwork, and integration of natural resource analysis with project design. Opportunities include watershed assessment, habitat restoration, bio-assessment, large NEPA and CEQA documents, water resource planning, water rights, and regulatory compliance. Mentoring and problem-solving in a collaborative environment are key components of this role.
Minimum Qualifications
Expertise in fisheries, aquatic ecology, and related disciplines (water quality, hydrology, restoration, modeling, permitting, conservation biology, etc.).
Detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with northern and central California aquatic environments is preferred.
5-10 years of relevant consulting experience required; 10+ years preferred.
Bachelor’s Degree in fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, or related field required; Master’s or PhD preferred.
