The Clinical Dietitian II works closely with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate evidence-based medical nutrition therapy that is integrated with patient-focused medical goals. Primary responsibilities include application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) through a nutrition-focused physical exam, nutrition/malnutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, interventions, and monitoring/evaluation of the patient’s progress. The Dietitian uses practice-specific dietetics knowledge and, as available, evidence-based practice protocols/guidelines to determine nutrition interventions. The Clinical Dietitian II has extensive knowledge in clinical practice evidenced by experience and/or specialty certifications listed in requirements. The role also involves business functions such as resource management, participation in compliance and quality performance improvement efforts to ensure safe and effective nutrition care. The Dietitian is part of the multidisciplinary team, serves as a nutrition resource, participates in team conferences, provides nutrition-related in-services, and contributes to development/revision of hospital policies. The role may involve community-based nutrition programs and maintaining professional competency. The Dietitian precepts interns and supports, models, and trains clinical dietitians in core behaviors and responsibilities of the department and organization. Responsibilities

Assess nutritional needs using standardized practice and critical thinking. Identify nutrient requirements according to age, disease, and individual needs for assigned patients. Demonstrate clinical and age-specific competency as evidenced by tools, forms, audits, tests, observation, etc. Act as a resource person for the clinical team and serve as a liaison between other medical specialties and ancillary services. Assist in achieving compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, HFAP, or other accrediting standards to improve safety and quality of care and performance improvement. Attend medical rounds, patient care conferences, and continuing education/staff meetings. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and cross-training. Develop, implement, and monitor nutrition care plans and participate in discharge planning. Provide education using established behavioral change techniques. May lead, direct, and manage work within the department. Document all aspects of nutrition care in the medical record. Demonstrate compliance with regulatory standards through timely completion of clinical nutrition workload and surveys. Create/update evidence-based protocols in clinical practice and train others to ensure MNT practices are current and meet guidelines. Identify professional development needs and mentor others in clinical practice. Participate in training of clinical nutrition interns as preceptor. Participate in clinical research, on-the-job training, or QI projects. Lead quality measures and participate in cross-functional quality teams; design and test interventions to improve quality outcomes. Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from a US regionally accredited university or college with ACEND-approved coursework Master’s in a related Dietitian field for new graduates becoming licensed after 1/1/2024 Completion of a Coordinated Program in Dietetics or Dietetic Internship (ACEND) with no less than 900 hours (1200 hours for programs beginning 2012) Licensure/Certification Requirements

Registered Dietitian (RD) by The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) Licensed as a Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) by the NC Board of Dietetics and Nutrition (some positions allow licensure to be obtained within one month from hire) If less than five years of experience, certification in clinical specialty (e.g., CDCES, CNSC, CNSD, CSR, CSP, CSSD, CSGN, CLE, BCLE, etc.) or an advanced degree or approved practice in specialized roles; certification may be obtained within six months from hire or next exam date Some positions may require credentialing for billing purposes (e.g., NPI, Medicare/Medicaid, BCBSNC) within one month from hire Some positions may require maintenance of certification (e.g., CDCES) for billing purposes Professional Experience Requirements

Three (3) years as an RD with two (2) years in a clinical specialty, or three (3) years of nutrition experience in a tertiary care teaching hospital with specialty certification; or five (5) years of RD experience; must maintain certification until five years of RD experience is reached Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of the Nutrition Care Process and ability to apply all steps Comprehensive knowledge of medical nutrition therapy Understanding and application of Motivational Interviewing Critical thinking, active listening, and collaboration Decision making and problem solving Effective written and verbal communication with patients, staff, and physicians Ability to work independently on assigned units Ability to counsel and educate others General knowledge of nutrient analysis, word processing, and spreadsheet software Job Details
