Department Summary The Institute for Carbon Management (ICM) is a cross-campus technology-translation entity at UCLA. ICM focuses on translating pioneering carbon management solutions from laboratory bench-scale to pre-commercial and commercial-scale devices, prototypes, and software solutions. Its activities span two major areas: (1) Technologies for carbon dioxide removal, utilization, and avoidance, and (2) Technologies for creating new supply chains and processing approaches for critical materials like Li, Ni, Co, Mn, Mo, essential for the clean energy transition and reducing the carbon footprint of extractive processes.

ICM is organized into action teams that are convergent, agile, and world-class, enabling technologies to be awarded prizes such as the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE and the 2021 Liveability Challenge. Technologies developed by ICM are being commercialized through spin-out companies including CarbonBuilt Inc., Concrete-AI Inc., and SeaChange Inc.

Position Summary ICM seeks an experienced engineer to join its latest cutting-edge action team, with potential for global impact in carbon removal. The role involves working on novel electrolyzers for hydrogen generation and mineral precipitation for CO2 avoidance. The ideal candidate will drive technological innovation, contribute to engineering design, and be involved in scaling technology from prototypes to pilot plants and beyond. Collaboration with a dedicated, impact-driven, and results-focused team is essential.
