Main UNCW Campus Brief Summary of Work for this Position: The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina Wilmington seeks to hire two nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor(s) of Natural Resource Management starting August 10, 2026. This is not a remote position and may be required to teach both in person and online. The successful candidate will teach 5 courses per year. Courses taught will include either Introduction to Environmental Sciences (EVS 195) or Global Environmental Issues (EVS 205), and three or more of the following established courses: EVS 489: Wetlands Ecology and Management EVS 450: Avian Ecology and Management EVS 410: Environmental Modeling EVS 440: Wildlife Field Methods for Conservation - Birds EVS 472: Coastal Protected Areas Management EVS 519: Advanced Applied Environmental Research EVS 540: Foundations of Environmental Conservation and Management Responsibilities and Qualifications Responsibilities: Create and maintain a robust research agenda focused on applied research that informs natural resource management and conservation. Maintain a strong commitment to teaching applied undergraduate and graduate courses in targeted disciplinary areas (e.g., lab, field, real-world projects, case work), mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and working in an interdisciplinary academic context. Generate externally funded research, publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and present at conferences/symposia. Actively engage in departmental meetings, committees, and other acts of service to the department, college, university, and their profession. Community engagement through research/evaluation, education, or practice, particularly with a local or regional focus, is encouraged. To support program development, candidates with expertise in fisheries may develop a Fisheries Field Techniques course. Qualifications: Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Applicants must hold a PhD in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or closely related field on or by August 1, 2026, to be eligible for employment in this position. Note: ABD candidates may be considered; doctoral degree must be obtained within the first academic year of employment. Demonstrate the ability to maintain a strong commitment to teaching applied undergraduate and graduate courses in targeted disciplinary areas, mentoring students, and working in an interdisciplinary context. Demonstrate the ability to generate externally funded research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present at conferences/symposia. Primary Function of Organizational Unit: The Department of Environmental Sciences focuses on the relationships among the social, physical, chemical, and biological aspects of natural and built environments. The department offers an interdisciplinary curriculum, drawing upon the resources of many related fields to provide rigorous analysis to understand environmental problems and propose solutions. Our curriculum inspires students to become active and engaged environmental stewards. College/School Information: The College of Science and Engineering offers programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, Doctor of Philosophy degrees in various fields, and additional combined programs. The college emphasizes instruction and research opportunities across natural and behavioral sciences, information technology, data science, mathematics, and engineering.
