TxDOT’s Design Division is seeking an experienced Transportation Engineer in the Highway Safety and Operations Group in the Project Delivery Section based in Austin, TX. Transportation Engineer I: $78,000 – $93,000 Transportation Engineer II: $88,000 – $102,000 Transportation Engineer III: $95,000 – $110,000 Transportation Engineer IV: $105,000 – $128,000 Work Location

Transportation Engineer I

Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with federal and state laws, policies, and standards. Contact with governmental officials and private entities. Requires standard supervision.

Transportation Engineer II

Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas. Independent work on assignments; unusual issues referred to supervisor. Contact with governmental officials and private entities. Establishes own work plan and priorities.

Transportation Engineer III

Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas. Assumes direct accountability for the work product. Provides technical support to districts, drives to project locations as required, and performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transportation Engineer IV

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas. Virtually self‑supervising and assumes direct accountability for the work product. Provides vehicle traffic engineering support for districts in project development, negotiates fees and budgets, monitors consultants, and negotiates contract work schedules.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related science (accepted by TX PELS). Minimum Experience:

4 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related graduate‑level education may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis. Valid driver’s license – requires driving a state vehicle. TX Licensed Professional Engineer*. Safety Impact Certificate. Preferred Qualifications

Professional Traffic Operation Engineer (PTOE). Road Safety Professional (RSP). Traffic engineering terminology, principles, practices and methods. Geometric design relationships to traffic operations. Applicable engineering applications and methods to support efficient planning and design activities (AASHTO Green Book, Highway Design Manual, Highway Safety Manual, Highway Capacity Manual). Statistical analysis methodologies and reporting procedures. Familiarity with FHWA Interstate project requirements. Facilitating groups using effective communication methods and guiding others to follow procedures necessary to complete complex tasks. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools. Balancing‑walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling. Standing – prolonged periods of time. Walking – moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance from one work site to another. Fingering‑picking, pinching, typing – working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand. Talking‑expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words. Hearing – perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication. Close visual acuity – work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts. Visual acuity – determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.
