Park Maintenance Worker Crew Leader – East Parks
The
Park Maintenance Worker Crew Leader – East Parks
is responsible for overseeing and actively participating in the maintenance, repair, and operations of designated City parks, facilities, and athletic fields such as Hometown Heroes Park and Lobit Park. This position provides first‑line supervision of assigned maintenance crews, coordinates daily work assignments, and ensures high‑quality care of athletic fields, playgrounds, open spaces, and park amenities.
Due to the nature of these responsibilities, this role is
subject to random drug screening
under the City's safety‑sensitive positions policy.
Responsibilities
Provides daily leadership, supervision, and direction to assigned crew members, including task assignment, quality inspection, and safety oversight.
Oversees and participates in mowing, edging, trimming, blowing, and landscaping tasks to maintain park grounds in excellent condition.
Directs and participates in specialized baseball and soccer field maintenance, including dragging, chalking/painting lines, setting field dimensions, leveling infields, repairing pitcher’s mounds, goal areas, and outfields, and scheduling renovation projects.
Plans and documents preventive maintenance schedules for equipment, vehicles, and athletic field infrastructure.
Performs skilled trade tasks such as carpentry, irrigation repair, painting, plumbing, electrical, and masonry as needed.
Operates and maintains trucks, tractors, mowers, specialty turf equipment, and small engine tools.
Inspects facilities, structures, irrigation systems, and athletic fields; records and reports findings; initiates corrective action as required.
Applies safe and effective methods for weed, pest, and disease control in turf and landscaped areas.
Oversees and coordinates with contractors and service providers to ensure compliance with City standards.
Maintains accurate inventory of parts, supplies, equipment, and chemicals.
Provides customer service to park users, athletic organizations, and the general public, ensuring facilities meet community needs.
Non‑Essential Job Functions
Assists with special events, tournaments, and City‑wide recreational activities.
Provides input on future park improvements and facility upgrades.
May assist other park divisions or crews when necessary.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in park maintenance, athletic field care, or a related field.
Noncommercial Certified Applicator License with weed/lawn/ornamental pest categories, or ability to obtain within one year from date of hire.
Valid Texas driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous supervisory or crew leader experience in park or athletic field maintenance.
Certification in irrigation or athletic field operations.
Knowledge of
Maintenance and preparation of dirt infields, baseball mounds, base paths, and soccer goal areas.
Proper techniques for dragging, watering, leveling, chalking, and compacting athletic field surfaces.
Operation and maintenance of irrigation systems, pumps, and controllers.
Safe use of chemicals for turf and ornamental care including products and materials for field preparation, dust control, and weed prevention on dirt infields.
Park facility layouts, landscaping practices, and public facility maintenance.
Trade skills in carpentry, plumbing, painting, and basic electrical work.
Safe work practices and procedures related to parks maintenance and equipment operation.
English grammar, spelling, punctuation.
Purchasing policies, procedures and limits.
Skills in
Supervising, training, and motivating work crews.
Safe operation of trucks, tractors, equipment, and power tools.
Preparing fields for baseball and soccer use, including marking lines, setting field dimensions, and repairing wear areas.
Applying fertilizers, pesticides, and turf treatments according to regulations.
Problem‑solving and effective decision‑making in field operations.
Recordkeeping, scheduling, and documentation of maintenance activities.
Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios.
Ability to
Plan, assign, monitor, and evaluate work of assigned crew members.
Communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and the public.
Work independently and as part of a team in outdoor conditions.
Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
Meet schedules and adapt to changing work priorities.
Physical Demands
Very heavy physical demands: exerting over 100 lbs. occasionally, 50 lbs. frequently, and 20 lbs. constantly.
Extended periods of walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and standing.
Repetitive use of hand tools (rakes, shovels, tampers, etc.) and operation of motorized field maintenance equipment.
Work requires outdoor exposure to heat, cold, rain, or other hazardous conditions.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily outdoors in parks, athletic fields, and landscaped areas.
Exposure to loud equipment, dust, chemicals, and varying weather conditions.
Frequent contact with the public, contractors, and City staff.
