Job Summary: The

Labor and Delivery Nurse

provides care to expectant mothers throughout the childbirth process, including the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum stages. This role includes monitoring the mother and fetus, assisting with deliveries, administering medications, providing emotional support, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective care.

Key Responsibilities:

Monitor vital signs of mother and fetus during labor and delivery

Assist physicians and midwives with labor procedures, including epidurals, inductions, and emergency cesarean sections

Provide direct care during labor, including coaching breathing techniques, pain management, and emotional support

Administer medications, including IVs, epidurals, and Pitocin, as prescribed

Recognize and respond quickly to signs of complications in both mother and baby

Maintain accurate and detailed patient records and charts

Educate patients and families on postpartum care and newborn care

Provide support during high-risk pregnancies, premature births, and neonatal complications

Follow hospital policies, infection control procedures, and patient safety protocols

Collaborate with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals

Support breastfeeding initiation and instruction for new mothers

Qualifications:

Education:

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; BSN preferred for some positions or required within a certain time frame

Licensure & Certification:

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in applicable state; Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification; Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required or obtainable upon hire; Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification preferred

Experience:

1–2 years of nursing experience, preferably in obstetrics, labor & delivery, or women's health; New graduate RNs may be considered with strong clinical rotations in L&D

Skills and Competencies:

Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills

Ability to remain calm under pressure, especially during emergency deliveries

Excellent communication and patient education skills

Empathetic, supportive, and compassionate bedside manner

Proficient in electronic health records (EHR) systems

Team-oriented with a collaborative approach to care

Working Conditions:

Rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays

Standing for long periods; lifting and positioning patients

Exposure to bodily fluids and infectious diseases
