Position Summary
Psychiatric Technician – Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center/HCPC at UTHealth Houston. This full‑time, non‑exempt position involves providing inpatient and outpatient non‑skilled nursing for psychiatric patients in a therapeutic, safe environment under direct supervision of licensed staff.
Location Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center/HCPC, Houston, TX
Responsibilities
Provide inpatient and outpatient non‑skilled nursing for psychiatric patients.
Supervise patients on suicide or other critical precautions, maintaining 1:1 or 2:1 continuous observation.
Operate equipment such as IVAC, sphygmomanometer, and scale.
Assist patients with activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, toileting, etc.) while respecting privacy.
Engage patients in trauma‑informed, therapeutic communication and clinical interventions.
Participate in developing and implementing patients’ treatment plans based on observation and staff input.
Maintain a therapeutic milieu and implement crisis de‑escalation and trauma‑informed care strategies.
Facilitate therapeutic groups and activities (community meetings, transition and wrap‑up groups).
Restrict and manage violent or aggressive patients following HCPC guidelines.
Escort patients on and off campus for medical emergencies and diagnostic procedures.
Conduct Q15 and Q30 minute observation rounds and document findings.
Perform environmental safety rounds and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Minimum 1 year of patient‑care experience; experience as a Mental Health Technician/Psychiatric Technician, CNA, MA, EMT, or completion of a Psychiatric Technician internship program.
Physical ability to exert up to 50 lb of force occasionally and up to 20 lb frequently for patient assistance.
Certification or training in trauma‑informed care and crisis intervention preferred.
Current Texas Driver’s License preferred.
