Dental Hygienist

UVA Health . UVA Medical Center is seeking a Dental Hygienist responsible for providing preventative and therapeutic dental hygiene services to patients in a high tech office using updated imaging and delivery systems and includes our own dedicated sterilization team. Responsibilities
Performs oral prophylaxis for patients by removing calcareous deposits and stains from teeth and by scaling tartar accumulations from teeth and beneath margins of gums. Applies fluoride to teeth to aid in the prevention of cavities. Applies medicaments to gums and between teeth of patients. Educates patients about the etiology, pathogenesis and management of periodontal disease. Reviews the patient’s health history form and requests updates when necessary. Reviews the patient’s medical history and oral condition, notes changes and extent of prophylaxis on the chart to provide the dentist with information for diagnosis and subsequent treatment as needed. Determines if medication is needed prior to treatment and asks if patient has pre-medicated; asks patients about any allergies. Requisitions supplies and equipment and maintains a well stocked operatory. Maintains clinic appearance and monitors area for safety violations. Other duties may be assigned. Minimum Requirements
Education: Associate’s Degree required; completion of an approved dental hygiene program required. Experience: None. Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professions Board of Dentistry. Certification: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required. Physical Demands Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequent bending/stooping/travel; ability to lift/push/pull less than 20 lbs; proficient communication, auditory and visual skills; and ability to write legibly. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, humidity, radiation, noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease. Equal Opportunity
