Overview

An AB who wants to take their career to the next level. You will be learning to operate the vessel while still performing deckhand duties. You will be responsible for the safe and efficient transfer of petroleum products between barges, ships, and facilities, including the completion of bills of lading and gauge reports.

Responsibilities

Learning to operate the vessel under the command of the officer on watch.

Complete TOAR upon being hired, dependent on route.

Assist in voyage planning and weather routing.

Keep the deck clean and free of lines. Make up all tows as directed by the Captain or Mate.

Use various tools and equipment for repairs, cleaning, and maintenance onboard boats and barges.

Perform knot tying, line/wire splicing, and handle heaving lines and messengers.

Participate in any training scheduled by the supervisor.

Provide proper direction and distance signals and information.

Use the radio for communication.

Steer the tug.

Fuel the tug.

Remove all garbage and clean all decks at the decrew.

Paint inside and outside of the tug regularly.

Maintain cleanliness of heads on tugs daily.

Load supplies.

Perform general cleanup of tugs and barges.

Assist with general cooking and galley duties as required.

Carry out essential job responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

Valid Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document with Mate of Towing endorsement.

TOAR preferred.

At least two years of experience as a deckhand.

Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.

Self-motivated and able to maintain professional relations with customers.

Physical ability to maneuver cargo hoses, handle barge lines, and board vessels.

Good communication skills, including voice and visual signals.

Ability to complete accurate paperwork and basic math skills.

Knowledge of safety practices, first aid, and CPR.

Complete HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hire.

Valid TWIC and state driver’s license.

Job Conditions and Environment

Use of various safety and operational equipment.

Exposure to all weather conditions.

Must not be afraid of heights.

Expected Hours of Work

Flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, and nights.

Willing to take call outs.
