Summary The Medical Assistant III, Certified provides advanced clinical and administrative support to providers and other health care team members. The role works under the clinical supervision of the provider for patient care activities and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor.

Responsibilities

Perform rooming and intake, collecting vital signs, height, weight, and reason for visit data.

Collect patient and family medical and social history.

Review medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy; administer medications.

Assist the provider during treatments, examinations, and procedures.

Collect specimens and perform phlebotomy.

Perform EKGs, eye exams, and assist with advanced procedures under provider direction.

Review patient record to determine required routine health screenings.

Ensure exam and procedure rooms contain appropriate supplies and that equipment, forms, and educational materials are available.

Provide patients with after‑visit, follow‑up or procedural instructions and educational materials.

Prepare, clean, stock, and maintain exam and treatment rooms; clean and sterilize instruments.

Order clinic supplies.

Assist with patient registration, check‑in/check‑out, appointment scheduling, test scheduling, and referrals; answer clinic telephone and assist in‑basket under provider or nurse direction.

Assist in emergencies as directed by provider or nurse.

Assist the physician with maintaining preventive health measures for a panel of patients.

Perform clinic quality or safety roles (e.g., safety coordinator, medication audit).

Maintain clinic quality databases or registries such as immunization registry.

Act as subject‑matter expert or resource for departmental business unit, answer questions, resolve issues, and recommend improvements.

Act as communications point of contact: participate in staff meetings and huddles, provide status updates, and disseminate information.

Serve as point of contact for scheduling/triage: coordinate coverage, notify staff, and triage assignments based on coverage needs.

Interview and orient new employees, attend HFE training, participate in hiring decisions, preteach orientation, track progress, and train other medical assistants.

Education Requirements

None required if other qualifications are met.

Completion of a Medical Assisting program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES is strongly preferred.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Medical Assistant certification by AAMA, AMT, CCMA, NRCMA, or NCMA.

Basic Life Support certification from AHA or ARC.

Professional Experience Requirements

At least three years’ experience as a medical assistant.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements

Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to engage positively with patients and families and work as a team with staff and providers.

Ability to use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record.
