Medical Laboratory Scientist - Microbiology - 40 hrs - Days Medical Laboratory Scientists in the Microbiology department are essential in diagnosing and managing infectious diseases through routine and complex molecular, microbiological and immunological testing. MLS team members adhere to strict aseptic techniques, follow safety protocols, and ensure precise data entry and quality assurance. In addition to bench work, MLS professionals troubleshoot instruments, work on LEAN processes, and collaborate with providers and nurses to support patient care. As a core laboratory within the health system, the Microbiology team processes samples from multiple locations. Leveraging advanced technologies such as molecular testing and other high‑complexity test methods, the team utilizes LEAN principles to enhance efficiency and maintain excellence in microbiological/molecular diagnostics.

General Summary

Under general supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood and/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of laboratory instruments and information systems.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

Performs routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histologic, immunological, microscopic, and/or bacteriological tests procedures on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information systems, for the purpose of diagnosing, preventing, or treating disease.

Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and/or develop solutions.

Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processes and resolve problems, including evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release.

Correlates results with other lab data and/or disease states and identifies technical, instrument, pharmacologic, and/or physiologic causes of unexpected test results.

Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments and/or laboratory information systems.

Following successful completion of competency testing, may perform processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision.

Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

Participates in various quality assessment and improvement activities such as proficiency testing, data gathering for quality assurance monitors, developing and adhering to safe work practices, participating in quality improvement committees, and completing regular competency assessments. Maintains the laboratory and procedures in inspection‑ready condition.

Education/Experience Required

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Coursework must align with duties of the specific pathology discipline and meet the education eligibility routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist listed on the ASCP website; alternatively, possess a categorical scientist level certification as a BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB, or have met the requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications.

Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.

Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform clinical laboratory functions.
