Primary function: The purpose of this position is to serve as Dental Hygienist to provide dental hygiene services to the designated population. The work is to perform the necessary dental hygiene treatment in an efficient and professional manner, meeting the diverse health and social needs of the patient population. The Dental Hygienist will perform all aspects of dental hygiene including dental prophylaxis on adult and pediatric patients as well as scaling/root planning on patients with periodontal disease in all stages. The Hygienist shall work with dentists to take quality x-rays and assist the Dentist with periodic, comprehensive and limited exams. The Hygienist shall take accurate periodontal measurements and record appropriately to facilitate proper diagnosis of periodontal conditions by the Dentist. Documentation of clinical observations and treatment is required, with adherence to industry standards and compliance with federal, local and state laws. Emphasis shall be placed on implementing a preventive dental health program including oral health and hygiene education, dental screening and fluoride varnish application, preventive care, definitive treatment, and following treatment provided. The Hygienist shall utilize the current data tracking system to track, recall, and evaluate services based on individual patient need and caries risk recalls in accordance with ADA, IHS and public health guidelines. The ideal Dental Hygienist for this position will have exceptional technical skills and the ability to connect with patients to provide caring treatment within the CIHA mission.

Primary Function

The following responsibilities and qualifications describe the role of a Dental Hygienist at CIHA. Duties include providing dental hygiene services, preventive and definitive care, education, and program development in accordance with applicable laws and CIHA goals.

Duties And Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of staff dentists, administers oral prophylactic and dental hygiene treatments to patients with various periodontal conditions, including gingivitis and periodontal disease. Treatments include dental prophylaxis, scaling/root planing, exposing x-rays when ordered by a Dentist, and assisting with recording conditions and treatment recommendations during exams.

Records medical and dental histories, reviews dietary habits, administers caries prevention agents, desensizes root surfaces, performs root planning, takes and pours impressions for study casts, removes sutures, and instructs patients in home care therapy and proper diet as it relates to oral health.

Coordinates hygiene recalls based on caries risk and patient oral hygiene status in accordance with IHS and public health guidelines.

Plans, coordinates, conducts and evaluates preventive oral health programs for groups such as diabetic, prenatal, cancer, psychiatric, geriatric, alcoholic, and physically disabled patients.

Develops and revises oral health instructional materials and education techniques for varying levels of patient ability.

Develops and presents oral health lectures, demonstrations, and visual displays to patient groups, CIHA staff, and clinic personnel using CIHA resources and professional materials.

Provides in-service training to dental and non-dental personnel within the clinic and other hospital clinics as needed.

Provides dental hygiene services in community-based programs.

Develops procedural instructions for dental hygienists, assistants, aides, dietitians, nutritionists, and nursing staff in delivering oral health care across CIHA properties.

Attends clinic and dental staff meetings to improve the oral hygiene program.

Develops, documents, and implements dental hygiene policies and procedures; evaluates them on a yearly basis and proposes revisions as needed.

Interprets dental hygiene program policies and applicable Medicaid and NC state dental hygiene laws for staff.

Ensures adherence to safety and infection control policies.

Responsible for dental hygiene quality assessment and strategic planning (long and short term).

Supports the mission, vision, strategic plan, and goals of the Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority.

Management reserves the right to revise or change job duties as needed.

Education/Experience

Must be a graduate of an accredited dental hygiene program with a degree in dental hygiene.

Must have current license to practice dental hygiene in North Carolina.

Must obtain and maintain all certification and education requirements to annually renew the NC dental hygiene license.

Meeting qualification as a Public Health Hygienist in NC will increase value to the CIHA Dental clinic.

Experience in planning and implementing dental health programs preferred.

Must have three months experience to become proficient.

Job Knowledge

Knowledge of dental hygiene sciences, including principles, practices, and procedures to conduct preventive dental health activities and develop standard guidelines.

Knowledge of the clinic\'s medical and dental services, patient population needs, and available resources to carry out the preventive dentistry program.

Skill in planning and presenting dental hygiene lectures and demonstrations to motivate behavior change.

Knowledge of developing and disseminating dental health education information to the public.

Demonstrate oral and written communication skills; ability to use computer programs.

Knowledge of OSHA, CDC, EPA and state regulations to ensure safety.

Complexity of Duties Deals with varied, complex, or routine situations. Requires planning, problem-solving, resourcefulness, and analysis. Uses judgment and initiative to plan work and achieve accurate results.

Supervision Received Supervised by the Hygiene Supervisor. Will work under the direct supervision of a dentist for preventive services and under indirect supervision for other tasks with children and community programs.

Responsibility for Accuracy Requires a high degree of accuracy in reporting abnormalities to the patient\'s primary Dentist and in documentation. Compliance with regulations and proper documentation is necessary for reimbursement and licensure; maintain OSHA, CDC, EPA and state regulations. Independent judgment is required when working with individual patients.

Contact With Others Contacts are with patients (including children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly), parents/guardians/care givers, community representatives, and clinic staff. Contacts are for education, screening, preventive services, and treatment-related communications. CIHA physicians, mid-level providers, dentists, and nursing staff may deliver care in various settings.

Confidential Data Must adhere to tribal guidelines, EBCI and CIHA policies for confidential data. Expected to maintain discretion and confidentiality; violations may lead to adverse action. HIPAA and related laws apply.

Mental/Visual/Physical Work can be mentally/emotionally stressful. Requires concentration, attention to detail, visual acuity, manual dexterity, and physical ability to sit, walk, stand, bend; may move up to 15 pounds occasionally.

Work Environment Exposure to communicable diseases. Follows NC dental practice statutes and safety, infection control, and EPA regulations. May require working during Administrative Leave if patient care is compromised.
