Ash Grove/Cement is committed to safety, growth, and community impact. This role is for a Chemist I in a plant laboratory environment, reporting to the Shift Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager. The position involves sampling and analyzing hazardous and non-hazardous waste samples in accordance with the facility Waste Analysis Plan and performing related duties as required. What You'll Be Contributing
Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines. Observe all required safety rules including those in the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Use safety equipment such as respirators, safety goggles, protective clothing, gloves, and other PPE as required. Read and become familiar with the facility Waste Analysis Plan and Quality Manual. Sample solid and liquid fuel shipments as needed. Ensure timely, thorough, cost-effective, and accurate analysis of each sample following Waste Analysis Plan requirements. Notify the immediate supervisor if any problems arise. Maintain overall cleanliness of laboratory areas and work space. Perform duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager to ensure quality analysis of laboratory samples. Monitor laboratory supply inventory and notify purchasing when levels are low. Initiate and/or complete chain-of-custody forms as necessary. Attend required training classes and cooperate with colleagues by performing unassigned tasks when needed. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. Position Responsibilities
BTU Position: generate log-in entries for samples, create analytical sheets, and perform sample analysis per the Waste Analysis Plan using specified equipment. Calibrate/standardize, run QC checks, and document results for calorimeters, pH unit, and related instruments. GC Position: receive, extract, and analyze samples for PCBs; log data in PCB logbooks; perform QC checks on GC equipment. Metals Position: digest/prepare and analyze samples for metals; log data and perform QC checks on ICP, AA, CEM microwave, and water bath. Follow procedures and maintain compliance with testing standards. Qualifications & To Succeed In This Position
2 Year Degree in Chemistry, Math, or related field preferred. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting preferred. Ability to read, write, and understand warning labels and instructions. Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work within tight timeframes and meet deadlines. Knowledge of chemical laboratory testing procedures and guidelines, including ASTM, AASHTO, ACI, EPA, and DOT specs. Customer-centric mindset and strong ethics, with attention to detail. Team-oriented attitude and willingness to grow with the technical services team. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle toxic/corrosive chemicals safely. Ability to make sound independent judgments and follow established guidelines, procedures, and SOPs. Experience with XRD, XRF, AA, SEM, ICP, and related analytical techniques is a plus. What to Expect in a Cement Environment
