Assist residents in designated nursing homes and assisted living facilities by empowering residents to resolve concerns and informing them of their rights. Listen to concerns, make recommendations to protect residents’ rights, and improve their care and quality of life. Provide advocacy services to residents and families, mediate disputes, and offer information/referral services related to long-term care. Conduct community outreach and provide facility staff education. Deliver services in a multi-county area and adapt to a flexible schedule, including evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends as needed. Travel extensively within a multi-county area (Lake, Moody, Brookings, Kingsbury, Hamlin, Deuel, Codington, Clark, Grant, and Roberts). Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, health, or related field may be considered. Experience or demonstrated expertise in long-term services and supports or other direct services for older individuals or individuals with disabilities; consumer-oriented public policy advocacy; negotiation and problem resolution skills. Knowledge of residents’ rights, confidentiality, and professional/ethical behavior; basic theories and methods of social work; interviewing techniques; and understanding of factors influencing interpersonal relationships. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Familiarity with federal and state laws/regulations governing the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program. Skills
Strong organizational and computer skills; effective interpersonal skills and collaboration with diverse groups. Good judgment, ability to maintain confidentiality, and active listening skills. Abilities
Prepare clear and concise documentation, reports, and correspondence; identify risks and develop strategies; provide prompt and responsive service. Communicate information clearly; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships; demonstrate compassion, respect, and tact. Remain calm in sensitive situations; exercise good judgment; maintain records; gather and analyze data. Interpret and explain laws, regulations, and policies; testify in fair hearings; listen actively and communicate effectively in writing and verbally. Plan and organize work, adapt to multiple demands, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines; work with minimal supervision and adjust to changing policies and procedures; utilize computerized data systems.
