Veterinary Technicians
to support the
Research Directorate (RD)
of The United States Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR). The role is a Contract Veterinary Technician position that provides technical support for research protocols, including advanced veterinary technical support such as Intensive Care (IC) and surgical support, and general research support functions. The support requires 24‑hour coverage, five days a week, of Intensive Care Unit (ICU)/Prolonged Field Care (PFC) protocols.
Estimated Start Date: 1 December 2025 (contingent upon contract award).
Required Screenings
Candidate must pass a government background investigation (NAC), employment physical, and drug/alcohol screening.
Requires at least a favorable adjudicated National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) or an equivalent higher investigation in accordance with Army Directive 2014-05.
Schedule
Monday through Friday 1st shift: 6:30 am – 3:00 pm.
Monday through Friday 2nd shift: 2:30 pm – 11:00 pm.
Monday through Friday 3rd shift: 10:30 pm – 7:00 am.
Schedule is designed to meet staff handoff times and ensure continuity of care for animals on protocols.
Position Responsibilities
Assist veterinarian and research personnel with examinations and procedures, including safe handling and restraint of animals.
Administer clinical treatments (topical, oral, subcutaneous, intravenous, intradermal, etc.) to critical and chronic animals.
Recognize changes in animal clinical condition indicative of complications or emergency and alert veterinarian and/or research personnel.
Accurately calculate drug dosages.
Perform basic laboratory procedures (fecal analysis, urinalysis, packed cell volume, etc.).
Perform basic preoperative preparation of animals (clipping, scrubbing, peripheral IV catheter placement, urinary Foley catheter, intubation via endotracheal tube on multiple species).
Monitor basic animal vital signs (temperature, pulse, end‑tidal CO₂, respiration rate) before, during, and after surgery.
Maintain accurate documentation and animal medical records per regulations and SOPs.
Perform anesthesia with inhalant anesthetic (Isoflurane) and anesthesia recovery and post‑operative care for animals.
Place intra‑dwelling catheter and administer epidural nerve block anesthetic for animals.
Perform euthanasia and necropsy of laboratory animals as required.
Clean and sanitize animal rooms and complete facility reports.
Maintain equipment used for or during the generation, measurement, or assessment of animal models.
Conduct and verify daily calibration of instrumentation, monitoring equipment, and data collection systems.
Maintain records of inspection, maintenance, testing, calibration, and standardizing operations.
Dispose of animal carcasses following established SOPs.
ICU & Advanced Veterinary Procedure Responsibilities
Simultaneously operate human clinical anesthesia equipment and associated advanced monitoring devices, administering Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA).
Perform both injectable anesthesia (TIVA) and inhalation anesthesia recovery and provide post‑operative care for animals.
Recognize changes in animal clinical condition indicative of complications or emergency and alert veterinarian and/or research investigator.
Provide instrumentation, surgical procedures, intensive care, and observation during recovery and survival stages.
Accurately calculate drug dosages and administer clinical treatments to critical and ICU‑level animals.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Possess or hold a current certification or license to practice veterinary medicine (LVT/RVT/CVT) or have a current certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) from AALAS.
Maintain current state veterinary licensure, certification, or registration to practice veterinary medicine as a skilled technician, or completed the Laboratory Animal Technician certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Acceptable titles include LVT, RVT, CVT, or LAT.
3–5 years of experience using human clinical anesthesia equipment (e.g., Drager) and infusion pumps (e.g., Plum A+ and BD Alaris) and administering TIVA.
Experience providing instrumentation, surgical procedures, intensive care, and observation during recovery, survival stages.
Ability to accurately calculate drug dosages and administer clinical treatments (topical, oral, subcutaneous, intravenous, intradermal, etc.) to critical and ICU‑level animals.
Ability to perform injectable anesthesia (TIVA) and inhalation anesthesia recovery and provide post‑operative care.
Expertise in recognizing changes in animal clinical condition indicative of complications or emergency and alerting veterinarian(s) and/or research investigator in a timely manner.
