Job Summary As part of a collaborative team of public servants, a nurse surveyor protects residents’ health and safety by conducting on-site inspections and investigations in Texas long-term care settings (home health agencies and hospice agencies). The role evaluates compliance with state and federal laws, writes detailed reports, and may testify at hearings. The position requires travel up to 80% of the time and availability for emergencies.
Essential Job Functions
Conduct on-site licensure inspections, complaint and incident investigations, and annual comprehensive surveys.
Investigate allegations for abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Communicate clearly and accurately with internal and external stakeholders.
Conduct exit conferences with agency staff regarding findings.
Complete inspection or survey reports detailing deficiencies and narrative to support regulatory findings.
Revisit agencies to verify correction of previously cited regulatory violations.
Perform quality assurance reviews of documents prepared by others.
Might supervise the work of team members during inspections and lend expertise to a survey team.
Occasionally testify at hearings or in court proceedings.
Assist with non-skilled care during emergency licensure action.
Be available for on-call duties for emergencies such as weather events or high-priority situations.

Knowledge of issues, concerns, and needs of populations at risk in a variety of healthcare and institutional environments.
Skill in interpersonal relations.
Skill in performing quality assurance monitoring, program review, certification, survey, or investigations.
Skill in providing guidance, policy clarifications, and information to others.
Skill in preparing detailed written reports.
Ability to multi-task and track multiple activities with completing priorities.

Ability to interpret regulatory policies, procedures, and regulations.
Ability to work independently and exercise professional judgment.

Ability to be organized and punctual.
Licensure Requirements
Licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Successfully complete all training (federal/state) for Home and Community Support Services Agencies and Hospice Orientation.
Initial Screening Criteria
Experience as an independent/autonomous healthcare provider in a home health or hospice setting, long-term care facility, hospital, or as a field nurse or case manager.
Prefer two years of experience providing services in a health care setting as a registered nurse.
Minimum of one year of experience in institutional care, home health care, hospice care, or other long‑term care setting preferred.
Additional Information
Flexibility in work hours is required.
Job requires 80% travel, including statewide travel, overnight, and weekend travel.
On-call duties for emergencies or high‑priority situations may be required.
Must have reliable transportation.
Position allows a compressed workweek of four 10‑hour days.
