Overview
Patient Care Associate - Nursing 9A - Mount Sinai West - Full Time Nights Base pay range: $27.85/hr - $29.88/hr Responsibilities
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the patients served in the assigned area. Performs and records patient’s vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respirations). Documents intake and output and other data as assigned. Obtains patient’s rating on pain scales as a fifth vital sign in all areas except Pediatrics. Performs clinical procedures, such as specimen collection, venipuncture, EKG, application of compression devices, post-mortem care, and maintenance of skin integrity. Sets up for selected procedures and assists RNs accordingly. Assists patient with activities of daily living (feeding, bathing, toileting). Orients patients to the clinical environment and aids ambulation and mobility as needed. Assists with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays, passing menus, assisting with menu completion, mixing nutritional supplements, and reporting variations in eating patterns to RN/Dietitian; maintains accurate and timely systems for transmission of dietary orders and changes. Maintains a safe, clean, and functional environment; supports patient movement and room maintenance as needed. Performs one-to-one or close observation for safety, elopement risk, or suicide prevention as required. Maintains isolation status for patients under direction of an RN and according to procedures. Performs scheduled rounding with emphasis on toileting needs, comfort, positioning, and pain awareness; documents rounding and notifies RN if rounding is not completed. Uses Vocera system according to sign in/sign out protocol where activated. Greets visitors, answers telephones promptly and courteously, escorts visitors when needed, and provides information as appropriate. Responds to Patient Call System and refers calls to appropriate staff. Maintains a safe, clean environment; reports physical plant and equipment problems to managers. Transports patients to stretchers or wheelchairs as required. Delivers and collects trays and bedside items; delivers flowers to patients. Performs unit/space stripping and assists with emergency clean-up and transports as needed. Transports specimens as required. Qualifications
High school level of knowledge (graduate or equivalent) to prepare reports, keep records and interact with people. Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred; venipuncture and EKG skills required. Certificate of completion of a Medical Assistant/Patient Care Assistant Training Program including EKG and venipuncture skills or equivalent. HeartSaver Certification from American Heart Association and/or BCLS. Employer Description
