Job Overview The Mental Health Associate provides direct care to adults and children with mental or emotional conditions or disabilities under the direction of nurses and physicians in the psych emergency room. The Mental Health Associate closely monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being and reports to medical staff. Responsibilities include:
Monitoring vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure
Performing EKGs, drawing labs, and collecting specimens from patients
Assisting patients in daily activities such as eating, dressing, and bathing
Providing therapeutic groups and recreational activities
Assisting in non‑violent crisis intervention
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree or AIMS Mental Health Associate (MHA) certification
Preferred:
Previous experience working with psychiatric and/or substance‑abuse patients
Experience in psychology or sociology
Certifications and Licenses Required
Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association
Scheduling Requirements
Shift working, 4:00 pm–12:00 am
Full‑time (FT)
Essential Functions
Attends and participates in unit meetings
Maintains a clean and comfortable environment for patients
Participates in room and/or body searches of patients as assigned
Assists in maintaining unit policies and procedures, procuring and maintaining supplies and linens stock; cleans discharge units when housekeeping is unavailable
Records pertinent data according to standards
Documents patient information daily in the medical record
Immediately reports patient condition changes to the nurse in charge
Precepts new employees and students as requested
Assists in orienting new staff members
Participates in the admission/transfer process and patient orientation
Contributes to the formation and execution of treatment plans
Provides standard nursing care as delegated by the registered nurse; physical care, escorting patients, patient‑related activities, therapeutic communication, specimen collection
Participates in patient/staff meetings, group and community meetings as required
Contributes to updating patient care plans
Plans and participates in recreational activities for patients
Supervises patient interaction with family members during visitation; provides supportive intervention as required
Recognizes abnormal vital sign data and reports directly to the RN
Performs venipuncture, draws blood specimens, collects specimens (blood, urine, sputum, stool) with proper labeling
