Overview
Phlebotomist Outreach role at Brown University Health. Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Collects samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units, including pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Upholds patient and family centered care in alignment with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, values, and life span considerations. Responsibilities
Perform functions related to the computer system to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens, including patient registration with identification and verification, entering demographics and order information, and filing documentation per policies. Manage Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) processes: obtain supporting diagnostic codes, document review, patient signature, and scanning. Carry out clerical activities such as medical necessity follow-up, filing records, daily checklists, answering phones, and delivering reports; register patients for tests and obtain necessary insurance and biographical information to complete registration records. Provide patients with forms and instructions for test preparation; schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures according to priority and test type. Use collection labels and pathology handbooks to ensure specimens are collected in proper containers and meet special collection requirements; observe universal precautions and verify patient identity prior to venipuncture. Obtain blood samples and other specimen types as needed; monitor patients for adverse reactions and document any deviations from puncture procedures. Prepare specimens for specialized tests (e.g., thyroid-releasing hormone, therapeutic drug monitoring, D-Xylose tolerance) and manage labeling, wrapping, and transport of samples. Maintain records of sample procurement and perform related duties consistent with hospital policy and infection control procedures. Register patients, order tests, and complete related clerical tasks including interviewing patients to obtain insurance and medical information as needed. Ensure all essential functions reflect age-specific patient needs and follow procedures when obtaining samples in various settings, including home if applicable.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED required; Phlebotomy certificate through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) and/or completion of a Phlebotomy certificate program with formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures. Experience: In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered. In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered. Skills: Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants; strong interpersonal skills to communicate procedures and alleviate patient anxiety; clerical skills to prepare and maintain records; familiarity with blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, and safety protocols; ability to distinguish colors; required Phlebotomy certificate.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Works in an inpatient care environment with considerable walking and potential physical effort; occasional exposure to odors and communicable diseases with adherence to infection control procedures. Manual dexterity for venipunctures and ability to work in conditions involving aging patient populations and varied developmental stages. Exposures minimized by standard precautions; driving not required unless specified; no additional driving requirement noted.
