Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a classified position that reports to the Director of Therapeutic Services. This position performs responsibilities without clinical supervision and may have supervisory responsibilities for doctoral level psychology students.

Minimum Qualifications

A doctoral degree in psychology, (Ph.D., Psy.D. Ed.D.) from a doctoral program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), current license to practice as a psychologist in the state of Arizona, and two years professional experience post licensure, which should include a minimum of one year of experience working with children/adolescents in a forensic, and/or correctional setting.

Essential Duties & Functions

Conducts psychological testing with court involved youth, interviews youth and their guardians, interprets test results and integrates test data and collateral information into comprehensive written psychological evaluation reports with specific recommendations for interventions. Consults with court staff including judges, probation officers, court attorneys and other court personnel regarding mental and behavioral health and treatment issues and delinquency. Attends staff meetings/conferences relating to treatment services. Assists court staff including supervisors and probation officers and other court staff in consulting with community agencies to obtain history and progress of youth, including schools, mental health agencies, social services, and out-of-home placements for ongoing evidence-based and best practice casework. Provides expert testimony in court hearings regarding evidence-based, best practices behavioral health treatment and available community resources. Provides in-service training regarding mental and behavioral health practices and treatment to court staff and other community stakeholders. Supervises doctoral level psychology students performing psychological assessments of court-involved youth. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Must have knowledge of the principles and practices of child development, child psychology, adolescent substance abuse, family systems, and juvenile delinquency. Must have knowledge of mental, behavioral and substance abuse treatment options available for children and adolescents and community agencies related to mental, behavioral and substance abuse issues. Must have knowledge of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and application of techniques. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office software products and the operation of a desktop computer. Must have the skills to administer and interpret psychological tests, including norm referenced intellectual, adaptive, and academic measures, and possess the clinical skills to conduct thorough clinical interviews with youth and their guardians. Must have good command of written language and be able to prepare comprehensive evaluation reports with distinctive psychological formulations that offer clear and specific recommendations to the Court. Must have good time management skills and prepare psychological evaluation reports in a timely manner. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of court employees, adolescents and their families, community agencies and the public.

Licenses And Certificates

Licensed psychologist in accordance with Title 32-Arizona Revised Statutes to practice in the State of Arizona. Maintaining the aforementioned license to practice psychology is a condition of employment.

Must be eligible to obtain Arizona Driver's License at the time of appointment.

Typically performs duties in an office environment and may lift materials and/or equipment 20 lbs or less.
