ERM is hiring Field Biologists to conduct surveys for special status species for a large construction project in Madera and Merced, CA. Successful candidates must be flexible and responsive to a changing work environment where schedules, site locations, and tasks fluctuate according to the needs of the project. This is a full‑time (40 hours per week) limited‑term role with a duration of one year and the possibility of renewal.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Field biologist position to conduct pre‑construction special status species surveys across the client’s project area. Work locations are often remote and require biologist to work independently. Electronic data collection. Handheld and sub‑meter accurate GPS data collection. Daily reporting and survey report compilation. Other duties as assigned or required. Compliance with ERM’s rigorous safety program. REQUIREMENTS
At least 2+ years of Biology plus other special status species experience. Expertise should include more than one of the following species: Blunt‑nosed Leopard Lizard (BNLL) Monitors, San Joaquin Kit Fox (SJKF), California Tiger Salamander (CTS), Swainson’s hawk (SH), Crotch Bumble Bee (CBB), Branchiopod (Fairy Shrimp). Minimum experience requirements for these species are as follows:
SJKF – minimum 15 sightings; camera trapping and excavation experience. CTS – minimum 20 hours; aquatic and upland surveys; familiar with DATF protocols, larval sampling, fence installation, excavation. Fairy Shrimp – minimum 20 hours in three different locations; ability to identify all listed and non‑listed branchiopods that occur in CA Central Valley; ability to identify in summer dry season.
Familiarity with nesting bird survey protocols and/or general bird identification skills required. Ability to work safely outdoors in variable weather conditions and on challenging terrain. Working knowledge of sub‑meter accuracy GPS technologies and map interpretation skills (e.g., NWI, USGS, aerial photography). Strong attention to detail in documentation of work. Strong organizational and communication skills. Desire to work in the field for an extended period and maintain a positive attitude. Willingness and ability to travel with overnight stays possible. Demonstrated independent and effective problem‑solving and decision‑making skills. Driver’s license required; valid driver’s license and/or ability to operate a company vehicle due to frequent travel. Fluency in English and Spanish highly preferred. PAY TRANSPARENCY
Annual base pay range: $73,008 – $78,000 ($35.10 – $37.50 per hour). The role is limited‑term, non‑exempt. Pay is based on relevant education, qualifications, experience, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, and business needs. Bonuses are not available for flex/fixed‑term employees. BENEFITS
