High Containment Biosafety Specialist

Job Summary
The High Containment Biosafety Specialist will participate in a comprehensive university-wide biosafety program to fulfill the duties as described in the NIH Guidelines, Federal Select Agent Program, US Government Policy for Oversight of Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) and Pathogens with Enhanced Pandemic Potential (PEPP), and in the UNMC/UNO Institutional Biosafety Committee Scope of Responsibilities in high containment facilities. This position will involve a 1.0 FTE of an employee’s position at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). This individual will assist the Biosafety Officer in providing biosafety and biosecurity oversight and guidance for all UNMC research activities involving high containment. Overall, coordination of the Biosafety Program is done through the Environmental Health and Safety Office.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering or related field.
2 years experience in a research laboratory to include some experience in the field of biological safety and experience designing and developing educational and training programs, and outreach and guidance documents.
Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook
Will consider additional related post high school education in lieu of required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree, DVM, MD, PhD
Database maintenance and/or data management (audit tracking).
Biosafety oversight in a biomedical research facility.
Experience in management/oversight of an BSL-3/ ABSL-3 laboratory preferably in an academic setting.
Hands-on experience in a high containment research facility.
Risk management training or experience.
Professional biosafety certification as a registered biosafety professional (RBP) or a nationally recognized certification in one of the biological sciences.
