Maintenance Mechanic III - Police Department

The Town of East Hampton - Maintenance Mechanic III in the Police Department at the annual rate of $60,455.62 for a 40-hour work week.

An employee in this class is a skilled mechanic in one of the major craft or specialty areas such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electricity, mechanical and welding. Other specialty trades areas include, but are not limited to, heating and refrigeration, audio systems, roofing, sheet metal, fuel storage tank maintenance, temperature control, control wiring, complex high temperature water systems, electronics, masonry, elevator repair, swimming pools, sewage treatment, glasswork, and repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery. The employee may be performing sub-craftsman level duties while supervising the work of subordinate Maintenance Mechanics II.

Responsibilities Include

Performs general carpentry work in the construction, alteration and maintenance of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows and furniture; Performs skilled work in a carpentry shop operating power saws, joiner’s wood lathes and planers; Determines types and amounts of materials suitable for painting and staining projects, including special mixtures, epoxies, primers, lacquers, stains and finishes; Prepares surfaces by taping, spackling, plastering or sanding, and applies paint or stain to interiors and exteriors of buildings, furniture and equipment, using brushes, rollers and spray guns; Installs, repairs and maintains audio actuated security systems, public address systems, fire alarm systems and related communication and electronic equipment; Installs, maintains or repairs valves, faucets, traps, sinks, washbowls, sewers, hot water heaters, steam boilers and other plumbing fixtures; Cuts and threads pipe, solders joints, maintains piping systems, checks for leaks, flushes out boilers and performs other maintenance of plumbing systems; Services, overhauls and maintains all types of refrigeration, fuel burning equipment and other heavy machinery; Regulates steam pressures and oil temperatures, inspects and adjusts temperature controls and other control devices; Repairs condensers, compressors, cooling towers, motors and controls, repairs pipes and ducts; Installs, repairs and maintains electrical appliances, motors, time clocks, relays, switches, control boxes, air conditioners, oil burners and fuse boxes; Installs, repairs, and maintains low and high voltage wiring systems for hydraulic and pneumatic controls; Lays out and installs new wiring systems; Preheats and cleans metals, lays out, cuts and fits materials for flat, vertical and horizontal welding; Selects proper welding heat and proper type of materials for correct penetration and strength; Does cutting, welding and hard surfacing on such areas as dredge parts, shell propellers, truck bodies and snow plows; Builds new pipelines; Operates and maintains steam/hot water heat exchangers, steam absorption cold generators, water circulation systems, temperature control valves, cooling and heating coils, ventilation equipment and associated systems; Performs skilled work in repairing electric motors, hydraulic pumps, chain drives, belt drives, electrical cables, conveyor parts and other mechanical assemblies; Performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of above ground and underground fuel storage tanks; Operates and maintains high-pressure boilers, feed water and condensate systems and water softeners; Prepares surfaces to be painted, mixes and matches paints and stains, applies paint to surfaces using brushes, rollers and spray guns.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, and the annual rate of pay is $60,455.62. Benefits include paid vacation, sick and personal time, NYSHIP Health Care coverage, dental and vision coverage, enrollment in the New York State and Local Retirement System.

Minimum qualifications; either (a) Completion of two (2) years of vocational education courses in a vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in one of the craft areas, and two (2) years of experience in the craft or specialty to which the incumbent will be assigned; or, (b) Four (4) years of experience in the craft or specialty to which the incumbent will be assigned; or, (c) An equivalent combination of the above education, or training, and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b); or, (d) One (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic II.

Special Requirements

Depending on the nature of the assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates may be required to possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the vehicle to be operated.
