Essential Job Functions Inspects, maintains, installs, adjusts, repairs, and rebuilds locks and detention hardware found in or on custody facilities, structures, equipment, doors, lockers, and furniture to ensure proper functioning. Opens locks that cannot be opened by ordinary means and opens safes by manipulation and drilling. Duplicates existing keys and makes new keys utilizing hand- and electrically-operated key cutting machines. Changes key and cylinder combinations in accordance with changes in the master key system. Establishes, expands, and modifies master key coding systems. Issues keys and locks and keeps related distribution records. Operates machine tools such as drill presses, grinders, and buffers in the fabrication and modification of lock and panic hardware parts. Changes safe combinations and repairs and rebuilds safe locking mechanisms. Inspects, maintains, adjusts, and repairs panic hardware and related door closing and locking devices to ensure proper functioning in emergencies. Interacts in person, telephonically, and via electronic messaging with coworkers in sharing work information, ordering parts and supplies, advising of work progress, and coordinating assistance needed for the completion of work orders. Drives a motor vehicle to satellite locations to address security concerns and perform periodic inspection and maintenance on locking devices. Requirements REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY OPTION I:
Four years experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and combination locking devices and the maintenance of master key systems, one year of which
MUST
have been working within a journey-level capacity. OPTION II:
Completion of a recognized locksmith apprentice training program of at least three years duration. Recognized locksmith apprenticeship training program is defined as an approved agency such as the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). For this option, applicants must submit a photocopy of the certificate of completion of a recognized locksmith apprenticeship training program WITH your online application at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of application filing. Please submit documentation to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org and indicate your name, the exam title and the exam number. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection.
LICENSE A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a valid California Class C Driver License prior to appointment. Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing. Out-of-State applicants will be required to obtain a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment. LICENSE INFORMATION You will be required to acquire a copy of your driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.
PHYSICAL CLASS Physical Class III – Moderate: stands or walks most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be implemented as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of disqualification in order to reapply.
Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT This Examination Will Consist Of Three Parts: Part I
A written multiple-choice test worth 25% assessing Knowledge of General Locksmith Work. Multiple-choice tests are not reviewable by applicants. Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% to proceed to Part II. Part II
A hands-on practical performance test worth 50%. Applicants must obtain a minimum score of 70% to advance to Part III. Part III
A structured interview worth 25% assessing Knowledge of Master Key Coding Systems, Knowledge of Locksmith Tools and Equipment, Analytical Skills, Prioritization Skills, and Security Awareness Skills. Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or above to be placed on the eligible register.
TESTING ACCOMMODATION If you require an accommodation to fairly compete in any part of the examination process, you will be required to submit documentation from a qualified medical provider or other qualified professional to support your request for a testing accommodation. You will be guided through the process by a Sheriff's Department representative with an initial deadline to submit documentation.
VETERAN'S CREDIT If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. Include a copy of your form DD214 with your application or email it within seven (7) days of filing.
ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION The names of applicants who pass will be placed on the eligible register for six months. The list will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Administrative Services Division, Facilities Planning Bureau. No person may compete more than once every six (6) months.
SPECIAL INFORMATION Successful applicants must complete a thorough background investigation, including fingerprinting. Disqualifying factors include felony or certain misdemeanor convictions, pattern of traffic violations, poor credit history, substance abuse, or probation.
ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED The Department has a zero tolerance policy for narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription. Violations may result in discharge.
