Your Impact The OSP Field Engineer provides training and supportive engineering services through highly detailed collection of telecommunications information from the job site. This position requires a working knowledge of all technical aspects of fiber networks. The successful candidate validates field design and layout of the telecommunications network including aerial, buried, and underground fiber, conduits, handholes, building entrances, and riser facilities. The engineer may serve as an informal lead for junior staff from time to time.
Core Responsibilities
Identify, photograph, and document detailed information of required facilities, including cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes, and other outside plant infrastructure.
Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances from existing or proposed OSP facilities to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.
Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.
Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.
Deliver detailed field notes and photographs to the engineering team.
Identify relevant obstructions to fiber placement and provide proposed mitigation strategies.
Demonstrate understanding of OSP construction techniques.
Read and interpret digital GIS maps, conduit records, and layout drawings.
Use tools such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finder, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks, and laser rangefinder.
Utilize electronic devices such as iPad, iPhone, laptop, file sharing, and email.
Core Experience
3+ years of experience in the fiber‑optic/telecommunications/telecom construction industry.
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Knowledge of outside plant activities (fiber cable design, pole line construction, conduit system design) and make‑ready issues.
Experience obtaining right of ways and easements where required, and the ability to note these on field notes for the desktop teams.
Ability to read and understand as‑built prints, identify conflicts with existing outside plant facilities, and select routing for lines and equipment.
Familiarity with GIS (ESRI) and shapefile functionality.
Identify different types of utilities, potential conflicts, and regulatory violations (RUS, NESC, GO95, NEC, etc.).
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus).
Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation with an acceptable driving record, and ability to pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
Physical Demands
Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Extensive travel and the ability to work on site for numerous projects in various states.
Ability to work outdoors 95% of the time.
Travel up to 100% of the time, by air or vehicle, potentially requiring overnight stays of up to two weeks.
Short‑notice travel flexibility.
Adherence to OSHA/State/Local safety standards.
Walk up to 3 miles per day on terrain such as gravel, pavement, grass, etc.
Work in poor weather conditions such as heat, snow, rain, or wind.
Work safely, with or without supervision.
Benefits At Pearce, we are committed to fair and transparent pay practices. The base pay range for this role is $24,000 – $29,000 USD annually. In addition to wages, employees may be eligible for performance and referral bonuses, production incentives, tool/equipment and fuel stipends, company vehicle, per diem, and other applicable compensation.
