The Role The Mechanical Engineer will research, design, and develop mechanical systems for U.S. Navy submarines and carriers in support of design and construction. This role combines technical engineering with hands‑on field support, requiring collaboration with shipyard trades and engineering teams to ensure all systems meet safety, quality, cost, and schedule requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Design, analyze, and develop mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal systems for submarine/carrier applications.

Support ship certification and delivery by evaluating open work and ensuring compliance with Navy and SUBSAFE standards.

Prepare and review technical documentation including design proposals, calculations, analyses, procedures, and deviation requests.

Collaborate with NAVSEA, Electric Boat, vendors, and shipyard personnel to address design and construction challenges.

Apply engineering principles to develop technically sound solutions for complex shipboard problems.

Participate in on‑site issue resolution in a shipyard environment; some travel may be required.

Must Have Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience; or Master’s Degree and 0 years of relevant professional experience. Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Experience or coursework in mechanical components and fabrication, valves and pumps, assembly and final outfitting, heat exchangers, seals and hydraulic actuators.

Experience with MATLAB/Simulink or similar modeling tools.

Experience with StarCCM+, OpenFoam, or Python.

Understanding of mechanical engineering and design principles and how they apply to shipbuilding.

Knowledge of submarine/carriers machinery and how it interfaces with structural, electrical and hydraulic systems.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven technical writing ability.

Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams.

DOD Security Clearance is preferred, but not required to start.
