The Bridge Inspection Supervisor oversees bridge inspection activities for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) in La Porte, IN. The Senior Bridge Inspection Engineer conducts inspections of bridges, large culverts, and retaining walls to maintain public safety and protect public investment. The Senior Bridge Inspection Engineer is a Team Leader responsible for the supervision, training and performance of area Bridge Inspectors. Bridge Inspectors conform to the National Bridge Inspection Standards by inspecting each bridge at a minimum biennially, assigning ratings to bridge elements and reporting findings in accordance with Federal Highway Administration and INDOT guidance. Large culvert inspections occur at a minimum every five years, evaluating deterioration and reporting findings per INDOT guidelines. What You’ll Do

Manage the Bridge Inspection Team for the department’s ongoing operations; continually develop and implement improvements to the team’s work processes Perform biennial inspections for INDOT bridges Inspect large culverts (small structures 4’ to 20’ in span) Inspect retaining walls Review and approve some bridge inspection reports Determine specialized bridge inspection needs Quality Control Officer – perform QC office and field reviews Perform routine biennial bridge inspections Remain on-call to perform emergency damage inspections (e.g., collision, high water) Perform fracture critical and in-depth inspections using access equipment Perform special inspections for bridges with concerns Perform post-construction inspections for bridges Prepare and submit reports for completed inspections Report deficiencies to bridge maintenance crew for corrective action Submit bridges recommended to be programmed, including mini-scope and cost estimate Determine work needed to repair damaged bridges and coordinate the repairs Monitor project schedules of all bridges of concern monthly Other duties as assigned Qualifications and Success Factors

Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana or the ability to obtain such license within 6-9 months of hire Bridge Inspection Team Leader certification, or the ability to obtain such certification within 12-15 months of hire Understanding of how bridge and large culvert members function and the impact of defects on load carrying capability Knowledge of inspection principles, practices, techniques, and the ability to apply them as required Ability to read and interpret technical documents including bridge and large culvert design and rehabilitation plans, roadway plans, inspection reports, maintenance records, geotechnical data, hydraulic data, and maps Knowledge of bridge maintenance principles, practices, methods and techniques related to maintenance of bridges and large culverts Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, and to follow verbal and written instructions Basic computer skills and the ability to become proficient in new programs and databases Must have a valid Indiana driver’s license Physical requirements include standing, walking, crouching, climbing, balancing, kneeling, reaching, lifting, grasping, and sensing potential hazardous fumes; hearing and talking (including using a cell phone) Vision requirements include peripheral, close, distant, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus Ability to use tools such as pen and clipboard, digital camera, chipping hammer, range pole, measuring tape, handheld spotlight Ability to remain calm during emergencies Knowledge, understanding, and application of practices and methods in State Transportation NHI course "Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges" – Highly Desired NHI course “Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges” – Highly Desired May attend annual border bridge inspections Preferred Training

Demonstrated experience using inspection access vehicles and platforms for arm’s reach inspections Certified Asbestos Inspector licensure or willingness to obtain Certified SPRAT Level 1 climber or higher, or willingness to obtain Supervisory Responsibilities
