Overview

Adjunct Faculty are hired each semester on an as-needed basis. Adjunct Faculty are responsible for creating a learning environment that assists students in reaching their goals and for providing effective instruction and assessment within the framework of common syllabi provided.

Major Responsibilities

Facilitate student learning by delivering assigned classes in accordance with college policy and course objectives. Make optimal use of available technology to enhance instructional methods. Supplement and alter, where appropriate, lesson plans, assignments, tests, and materials. Maintain accurate student records, grades, and other requirements. Engage with students proactively and regularly in meaningful and productive ways that impact student learning and lead to a positive experience with Ivy Tech Community College. Demonstrate evidence of developing and implementing teaching strategies focused on engaging online students with their learning. Interact with students and co-workers in a professional and cooperative manner, complying with college policies, guidelines and expectations. Maintain a safe, quality online educational environment. Promote an inclusive environment that reflects the diversity represented by our students and employees, ensuring every individual feels respected and valued.

Instruction & Student Learning

Teach assigned courses as scheduled. Design curriculum embracing diversity to foster talent in students while modeling inclusive teaching strategies, with understanding of socio-cultural issues of underrepresented groups. Consider individual differences of students to design and support a range of appropriate learning activities. Identify students with academic or other needs and respond by utilizing appropriate resources. Use technology appropriately and communicate expectations concerning its use. Keep accurate records in accordance with departmental policies; maintain attendance and submit grades timely per College policies. Distribute and maintain accurate syllabi that incorporate departmental, college, cross-college, and instructor requirements. Conduct classes punctually and employ appropriate assessment techniques to measure student performance. Attend periodic meetings with the department, Lead Instructor, and Chairperson for teaching duties and professional development.

Student Engagement & Advisement

Create a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning and learner support. Use technology to assist in communication with students and foster a sense of community inside and outside the classroom. Advise potential or current students about the program, career, or transfer options to assist with degree completion. Refer students to appropriate student and academic support services available at the College or in the community.

Education And Experience

Master’s degree in engineering; or master’s degree and 18 graduate semester hours in Mechanical Engineering. All educational degrees must be from a regional accredited institution. Passion for teaching in engineering; excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to use innovative teaching techniques and tools for distance learning. Familiarity with distance learning and willingness to use technology in instruction. Ability to use collaborative learning techniques and student-centered methods of instruction. Ability to work well with students and colleagues in a multi-ethnic/multi-cultural environment. Flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum two (2) years of college teaching experience. Minimum two (2) years of related industrial experience. Strong working knowledge of current technologies appropriate to area of instruction.
